Greyhawk 13: Funny Foes & Merry Men
General Summary
From the journal of Whipporwhillow Wysterwind Whompenwood, aka "Willow", aka "The Garden Gnome"
We set out from the Chateau to the Castle Greyhawk in the midmorning. It was a dividedly devout party, with our Paladin of Heironeous, Miles, an elderly priest of Pelor, Raphael, and a couple new faces, Thalara Snake-Charmer, a war priest of Kord, and Liriel, a priest of Wee Jas. And, of course, myself. Findere tagged along as a lively theological debate filled the time from Chateau to Castle.
Upon our approach, we were hailed by some humans, possibly Furyondian? The men introduced themselves as Cap'n Cooper's Merry Men and manned the gatehouse of the castle to attempt to extort a toll from us. We conversed, unhelpfully, then, as they sang some silly sea shanties, we started opening the portcullis and gate. It didn't take but a few minutes and we gained entry. Unfortunately, castles are meant to very defensible, I guess, and as Miles stormed in, hot oil was poured on him from a hole in the ceiling, then he was promptly lit ablaze. He retreated as I dashed in. Raphael tried to cover us from the gate opening he had kept open with entangle (a fine and creative use of the spell), but the elderly man had trouble landing shots on our foes. Liriel and Thalara also dashed in, then Thalara promptly left. I found doors into the gatehouse, but the battle was fierce and not going well. Liriel fell, as she held but a knife and robes against the clubs of some armored foes while I held back some others. Miles, now extinguished, battled with the Cooperish captain and some of his cronies. The battle was not going well when a ruckus went up within the gatehouse and panic struck our foes.
Findere and Thalara had scaled the walls and attacked the Merry Men from above then, after clearing some of them, descended into the gatehouse, attacking our enemies from behind. I caused Cap'n Cooper to flee in fear and his men began to scatter. After that, Raphael healed a quickly dying Liriel, seemingly in just the time. Miles was weaving, but alive. We were victorious!
We spent a little time scouring the gatehouse for any valuables, finding some fine weapons. Findere also happened upon a secret door opening a shaft descending some 30 odd feet down to who knows what. An investigation for another time.
