Sesu

Once a year, when the moons are full and the tide high, a shoal of carp visits the small town of Sesu, at its centre a carp shiny and cerulean. It is said that when a child is allowed to swim with the shoal, it will be forever loved.

The Banks of the River Reva

Like many river towns, Sesu relies heavily on the waters to provide. Fishery and the cultivation of rise, oats, hemp, watercress, kale and sweet potato are the main sources on which the village thrives. But the fertile waters are both gift and danger. When ice melts and rains fall heavy, floods threaten the villagers' livelyhoods. One such disaster happend many years ago and the village has never forgotten.

The Legend of the Cerulean Carp

When sheets of rain poured down and the river roared, when homes were flooded and some even carried away, when the skies were dark and no fire burned, a child was lost. A child not much older than six years of age was torn away from its mother's grasp by the strong currents of the roaring river. Without the blink of an eye, without a second of hesitation, the mother dove after her child. She swam and dove and swam and called its name, until she too was carried away.
A week later, when the river had calmed and the villagers had started to repair their homes, a woman sat on the banks, washing mud off her belongings. A shoal of carp passed by. At its centre swam a spirit, bright blue and in the shape of its brethren. The woman watched the Cerulean Carp as it approached and behind it swam the child. The woman pulled out the child and held it tight. "Thank you," she whispered to the spirit, and it swam on. A favour in response to a great sacrifice made out of love.
