The Kingdom of Thule is founded near the north pole by Dream Giants. The kingdom prospers, as at this time the poles are merely chilly rather than the icebound hellscape they are today.
The name Thule, or more properly Thul, literally means "Apex"; the full name is Thulkar, meaning "Apex Realm/Kingdom". The name likely derives from being at the pole, although how they would have known that is an interesting question that has never satisfactorilly been answered. It is sometimes simply known by the calque "Apex Realm", or as Ultimate Thule to distinguish it from the ruined wastes it now resembles.
