Dream Giants

Dream Giants were the first of all giant-kind; born in the icy wastes north of Lathva, they would tower over their modern descendants if any still lived. Their skin was grey or purplish-blue, and their hair and eyes were almost always of the same color, red being the most common. Perhaps the most impressive feature of the Dream Giants were the swirling runic inscriptions that covered their flesh; whether these were natural patterns or later additions is debated by scholars, but what is known is that the runes contained magical power, enabling rune giants to create potent magical effects and dominate the minds of those that opposed them.
No single event destroyed the Dream giants; rather, as they spread across the world, they adapted to local climates and customs, until eventually the only trait that they shared was their large size, and even that has diminished in the eons since their birth.

History

The Dream Giants are a people whose history, where it is even remembered, is now little more than myth. Only the Lathvans preserve it in any completeness, although where they interact with the later Nightmare Empires their history becomes clearer to those outside that frozen realm.
The dream giants once lived in a place called the Kingdom of Thule, which many consider to be their homeland. It is also sometimes called Ultimate Thule, to distinguish it from the uninhabitable wasteland and ruins that now cover the boreal pole, or the Apex Realm, due to both its great advancement and its position at the literal top of the world.  Here they were ruled by their dynastic kings, the Voitarith (singular Voitari) and worshiped the great sun-disc which brought life to their frigid yet still green realm.
One day, however, the priests foresaw the end of Thule, their realm flash-frozen and a great blue star at the center of it, whose cold blue light froze everything it touched. The Voitar did not heed their warnings, however, leaving the priestesses to their own devices. They gathered all that they could and set out southwards, and began to worship and pray to this Blue Sun, hoping to appease its wrath and thus save their kinsmen who had stayed behind.
The prophecy of the priestesses was proven correct. The Blue Sun arrived, crashing from the heavens into the crown of the world. In an instant, almost all of Thule was destroyed. Only those on the very edge were spared, the scattered remnants of an ancient people. They now lived in a horrific, blasted waste, haunted by the ghosts of their less fortunate kin.
