Rarus Plains
Geography
The northern region of the Rarus Plains are largely barren and flat tundra, scoured by wind and bordering on the glacier-cragged lands of the northern arctic. This region is hundreds of feet above sea level. In the southern region, the Plains are a fractured landscape of ravines carved by flood waters wearing away the soft sandstone on their way to the sea. The western region is mainly prairie and rolling hills. The gradual fall in elevation as one heads south to the coast allows lakes to form intermittently, fed by rivers from northern thaws. This region is the most populated in the Plains. The eastern region transitions out of both the craggy southern terrain and the arid northern landscape and into the forests that butt up against the Twin Aster mountains and form the edge of the Elven Kingdom.
Fauna & Flora
Sparse, stunted grasses grow in every region except the western portion of the Plains, where the prairies are more vibrantly populated with trees, shrubs and flowers. In the north, stretches of coniferous trees sustain the large wandering herds of Caribou.
Natural Resources
Trees grow near the scattered lakes of the western region of the Plains, usually fruit-bearing trees. Hardly any other types of trees grow in this region, since they would be clear-cut for lumber quickly if they were found. The fruit trees are tended to carefully by the tribe that resides near a particular copse. Domesticated fruit trees are the primary crop of the Tribes along with a limited variety of grains. Quality land for farming is in short supply and tends to be hotly contested. Hunting the herds of grazing animals for meat, bone and hides is the primary source of food, tools and materials.
