Ceryl Mason Character in Oabos | World Anvil

Ceryl Mason

Ryl, Nightlight

Childhood

Ceryl grew up in a small boarder village in the western reaches. The village sits beyond the edge of the Radiance, and experiences a day-night cycle. Due to this, outside activities in the village are limited to daylight hours. The nighttime hours are reserved for sleeping or family activities.

The village sits on the edge of a wind plain full of tall, thick grasses that glow faintly during the nighttime hours. Ceryl's family home was build into the side of a hill. While many many of the families in the village focus on farming, her father was the head of the village guard. Even though he was rarely at home, the house was equipped for his old craft of stone masonry. Ceryl spent much of her time as a child exploring his workspace, and learning to work with different types of stone. While she never reached the skill of a mason, she would often create small sculptures as a way of settling down and finding peace. This is also how her love of ancient architecture started.

Ceryl's mother was a Myth Touched daughter of an Elementine and a Myth Touched human. While she still appeared mostly human, she would very easily get lost in her thoughts or wander off. Much of Ceryl's childhood was spent working with her father to help keep her mother hidden and safe. Their village had humans, myth touched, and elementine residents so it was easy enough to keep a low profile. In the village, her mother worked as a seamstress, and would sit for hours telling Ceryl stories of elementine history that her mother had passed down to her.

Education

At the age of nine, in an effort to keep her myth touched nature a secret, Ceryl decided to travel to Chronwhorl and study in the Academia Spire. What better place to hide her own elemental nature then in the halls of those studying to join the different branches of the Order of the Discerning Gaze? If she did well enough and joined one of the spires after her studies, she would be free of possible investigations. She lived and studied in the spire eleven years, and graduated in the top five students at the age of twenty. Upon graduation, she was invited to stay wi thin the Academia Spire as an Academia Researcher. She continued to hone her skills and left Chronwhorl at the age of twenty five as a specialized researcher known as a Historian Mythica. Historian Mythicas specialize in ancient lore, elemental powers, and old ruins.

During her school years she made a few close friends. Her best friend Navin also graduated in the top of their year, but chose to join the Lightbringer Spire as a seeker. Another of their friends, Randol, was found out as a myth touched in their seventh year of school and was kicked out. Despite having no abilities of his own, he was discovered when both his parent died of the Withering after the dragon of his region was killed. While the school was told of his expulsion he is actually imprisoned on the lower floors of the Academia Spire for researching why he was not also inflicted with the withering.

Current Day

Ceryl is currently staying on the outskirts of a village far to the south. The village is near some old Edlyr ruins she has been studying. She had been camping out for a few months in the area, until a local carpenter suggested building a house in the village. With the help of the carpenter and a local stone mason, she designed and built her house in the south shadow of a hill.

Appearance

Ceryl is a 5'6" human. Her brown hair is usually pulled into a messy half up-do, with the goal to keep it out of her face rather than an actual style. Large glasses obscure grey-green eyes.
