Aelliria

Structure

King>Prince>Duke>Marquis>Count>Baron>Lord (no land holdings)

Assets

Aelliria is an extremely wealthy kingdom with many castles and palaces. They have a well-trained, well-maintained Royal Army and Royal Navy (100 ships). They are also renowned for their national warhorse breeding program. Many horses are bred for their own armies but are also exported to allies.

History

Aelliria was initially the heart of the Tarthian Empire, and rumored to be the homeland of Emperor Tarthias himself. In 575 PST, when the empire was divided into threes, the first king of Aelliria was the eldest son of the Emperor and named the kingdom after his wife, Aellira (he addd an "i"). For a thousand years, Aelliria developed its own distinct culture from its sister kingdoms. Aelliria has been a relatively peaceful kingdom, although it has been known to engage in border skirmishes and wars with its eastern neighbor and occasionally Celassa and Liscia. Recent Aellirian history has been marked with war, however, including the Aellirian Civil War and the Ossian War. However, King Adam I hopes to steer the kingdom into another era of peace and prosperity.

Demography and Population

The population of Aelliria is ethnically homogenous. It is the most populated country of the Tarthian nations. The population is usually concentrated in urban centers, such as Not-Paris, but many people also live in rural areas in order to work the arable land.

Territories

Aelliria has no holdings outside its traditional borders.

Military

Aelliria is well-defended by its renowned Royal Army and Navy. Recruits undergo meticulous and rigorous training in all varieties of weaponry and hand-to-hand combat. Under the leadership of King Adam I and a few of his predecessors, the military is largely a meritocracy where the best soldiers may advance regardless of their social standing at birth. In times of peace, a relatively smaller contingent mans the borders and the ports/nearby coast, while the rest of the military is relegated to the Reserves, where they may go about their other professions/trades and be with their families. In times of war, the hierarchical organization of the military is critical to levying the entire army in a short period of time. Aelliria's government maintains a large military budget with a strong emphasis on competitive compensation for active duty soldiers, as well as generous pensions for veterans and their families. Although there is a position of Marshal-General of Aelliria on the Privy Council, the King is ultimately the commander-in-chief of the military.

Technological Level

A militaristic country, Aelliria is very interested in military technology. Artillery and guns have been recently introduced to military weaponry, and contributed to Aelliria's quick victory over Ossia in the Ossian-Aellirian War. On the non-military side, Queen Constance has been fostering a culture of scientific advancement within Aellirian universities. She is currently contemplating establishing a Royal Academy of Science to promote collaboration and the sharing of ideas amongst Aellirian scientists in order to speed along scientific discovery. Aelliria (and the rest of the world) has yet to harness the powers of electricity, coal, steam, fuel, etc.

Foreign Relations

Aelliria generally attempts to maintain peaceful relationships with the other countries on the continent. Again, Aelliria is particularly linked to neighbors Celassa and Liscia via marriage alliances. However, their well-trained, easily mobilized military is indicative of a country that is a master of warfare.

Agriculture & Industry

Industrialization has not yet occurred in this period of history, so Aelliria is primarily an agricultural power, although it also boasts superior mercantile activity. Aelliria primarily grows wheat, grapes (for wine), and fruits/vegetables for mass consumption and export. In addition, Aelliria has hospitable land for raising livestock, particularly poultry and beef. Aellria's government is also well-known for their excellent warhorse breeding program, designed to supplement their army and those of their allies. Aelliria also has a few mines for iron ore, but must primarily rely on its trading partners for steel production. Notably, however, Aelliria has recently discovered bountiful sources of saltpeter.

Trade & Transport

Aelliria has a fine network of state-controlled roads that link its major cities together. Use of these roads is free to anybody, without having to pay a toll. Construction and maintenance of state-controlled roads is supervised jointly by the Minister of Commerce and the Minister of Internal Affairs. Intra-region roads are officially under the jurisdiction of the feudal lord in charge of the region, but this responsibility is often delegated to the municipal levels when connecting smaller cities and towns within the same region. Aelliria is bound by sea to the north and to the south, and as such both coasts also have a number of prominent port cities. These ports are nationally run (for customs duties, immigration records, etc) and overseen by the Minister of Commerce, with aid from the Minister of State when dealing with international trading and foreign nationals.

Education

Currently, the majority of Aelliria is mostly illiterate. Municipal governments are in charge of education for the common people, such as establishing public schools. For the rich and noble, children are usually educated by private tutors. Aelliria is home to a small handful of prestigious universities, also city-run but subsidized by the royal government. Young men typically attend these universities around age 16, with university attendance compulsory for those wishing to be recognized/certified/licensed attorneys and physicians. For students not wishing to study these subjects, there are also courses of study in theology, philosophy, non-medical science (like chemistry), literature, and mathematics. On a case-by-case basis, young women may also be admitted to university, although this is rare due to prejudices against women and fewer educational opportunities for women and girls to begin with. However, Queen Constance is currently advocating for policies that will increase literacy throughout Aelliria, even among the poor, and increasing access to education, especially for women.

Infrastructure

Aelliria has a strong infrastructure bolstered by the Minister of Internal Affairs and the Minister of Commerce. Aelliria's major roadways are well-maintained and safe. The royal government and the above ministers are in charge of any infrastructure on a national scale, including military fortifications, border defenses, inter-regional bridges and roads, etc. Typically, however, the feudal lords are charged with funding, constructing, and maintaining infrastructure within their region, particularly in rural areas. Within cities, municipal governments are in charge of their own roads, walls, municipal government buildings (town hall, municipal courts, etc), and bridges. However, they are at liberty to request the help of their feudal lord or even the royal government if needed.
