Wist Pulling
To recap, Wist is the innate field/energy that fuels consistent existence in an otherwise chaotic world. The Soul is the term for the unique shape Wist takes within one's body. The Soul is present throughout the body, but collects mainly within the base of the stomach, the large intestine, and the brain.
Extracting one's Soul is a difficult process, requiring a long metal or wooden stick inserted in the mouth and down the throat, before twisting and pulling the wist back up. This is a difficult process due to the properties in moving Wist against the standard direction of travel.
Wist follows the path most traveled, and deepens those paths making them sharper and harder to cross, even metaphysically. When the Soul is pulled from the stomach, it is manifested physically due to the entangling caused by pulling wist along an unnatural path.
Once extracted it must be pulled and aligned into a clean thread. The faster this process, the more the wisthread stays connected to the Wist field. This connection is what provides the energy to have a stable physical form, as well as seemingly break standard physical laws as it is moved by the Mage's mind.
To destroy wisthread requires enough damage to make the thread to pull on the mage's inner wist for energy, and then keep that damage up until the mage is too drained to overcome the damage still being applied. This kills the mage. Meteormettle severs the connection to the mage itself, thus avoiding the difficult part of the process.

Everyone in Cantumland has their wist pulled around age 11, barring extreme cultural or religious views.
Discovery
Discovered from an older practice of pushing a stick down the throat to activate the gag reflex and have the soon to be mage vomit up a small amount of wist. It was noted that more wist could be harvested if instead of vomiting, the wist was scraped off and collected onto the stick itself.
