Magic in Nor | World Anvil

Magic

Magic is a powerful force on the World of Nor. Its source is the primal energy that encompasses the multiverse. This energy is concentrated in the inner plane, but is not limited to them. It surrounds most of the planes of existence and flows through every living thing.
Many native species of Nor can feel and use this magical energy innately. Dragons, Fae, and other races or Nor have an inborn ability to use this power in way that are natural for them. Other creatures draw on it to produce very specific and limited effects.
For the races that are not native to Nor, some of them have a limited ability to use magic. Some Elves are born with the ability to draw magic but on when close to places that the wall between their homeland and nor is weakest.
Some dwarves have the ability to magic into object creating magic items and powerful Runes.
Some races like Humans, have no innate connection (With some very exceptions) and can't innately use magic at all. Where then, do Wizards and cleric and other caster get their power?
In the early days of Nor, when the Gods first arrived, they were not gods, but powerful humans, that came from another plane. They are referred to as Ascendants in most history book and their story can be found elsewhere. These Ascendants had a powerful connection to the magic of the multiple planes. They also had with them humans, that were much more advanced than the native humans living on Nor already. These beings could draw on power far greater than anything that the creatures already of nor could do.
This was both a curse and a blessing. It allowed them to expel the Praxites, who were in control of most of Nor at the time, and repair the damage they had done to the plane. It also was a powerful weapon that could be used when the ascendants did not agree on thing, which happened frequently. In fact, it was the reason they had to leave their own home, as they destroyed it with their power wars.
It almost seemed that the same was going to happen on Nor as the ascendants starting becoming hostile to each other. That is when they decided they could not allow the same thing to happen here that happened on their homeland. They gave up their mortal forms, and ascended to Godhood, each one trapping themselves in a narrow focus, that would become their portfolio. The humans they brought were left to fend for themselves, which they were certainly capable of doing.
Divine Magic
Once the ascendant’s left, there was no Arcane or Divine magic on Nor. There was only magic that native species had access to. This all changed one fateful day. Many of the humans had taken to worship of their former Lords, understanding that though they left their mortal bodies behind, they still watched over the world. Thus, churches were erected and religions founded. One such Cleric, a worshipper of Kerius, who was also a surgeon, was trying to save the life of a young boy who had gotten injured in an accident. He prayed to his lord as he always did, and suddenly he found himself filled with divine energy, and the ability to channel that energy into the boy, healing him of his wounds. That day the first divine caster was created and divine magic was introduced to the world.
Over the next few years other priests started learning how to ask their gods for magic through prayer, and soon Divine magic was used for many things. For many years Divine magic was the only magic that was available on Nor, and was granted only at the whim of the Gods. If a Priest did not follow certain edicts, that power could be taken away from them by their patron.
Arcane Magic
After divine magic had become relatively common and was even being practiced by some of the other races, there naturally cane people who wanted to learn more about it. One such Scholar, Andry, made the discovery that the power that was granted to priests did not come the God as previously though, but instead was coming from source across the planes. The Gods simply gave drew it to Nor and imbued their servants with the energy. Andry wondered if there was a way to do the same thing, without the intervention of the Gods. He had spent many years studying the way dwarves used runes to concentrate magic into objects, and the way the Elves could pierce the barrier between our plane and the ethereal plane in order to draw their "Elven Magic" here to nor.
Taking that knowledge, he built a large pool, and used runes to bind magic to the pool allowing it to breech the vale into the inner planes, that are the source of magic and bring it to Nor. The Runes were used to create a method for someone to access this magic by using gestures and words much like a priests would do when activated the magic given to them by the Gods. He also designed a way to channel this energy across Nor by creating magical canals, or "Ley Lines".
His experiment worked and he found that he could manipulate the energy and cause effects like a priest could. The magic however was much more raw as it didn’t have the buffer of the gods, and while it could do some things easier than Divine magic, other things it had difficulty with.
The pool in fact worked so well, that when Andry tried to shut it down, he found that he couldn't. The runes had all disappeared becoming an immutable part of the pool. He had opened a door that would remain open forever. At first, he tried to keep his work a secret, only teaching his few assistants the proper gestures and word to command the pool, but eventually that knowledge spread and more and more mages had access to arcane magic.
Magic Today
Over the many years both arcane magic and Divine magic have evolved. Also new methods of access magic have been discovered. There are also many other ways for people to access magic. The below articles will talk about the different types of magic, and how they are used by those who know their secrets.
