Drudane

Drudane is a tropical plant which grows only on the Shoal Islands. It is a versatile plant with many uses. It has long bamboo-like shoots for stems, which grow about 3 to 4 feet tall and are topped by large green leafy fronds. Almost like miniature Palm trees. There are usually three to four leaves. Just underneath the fronds are small bunches of a blueish berry.

Drudane only grows well on the Shoal Islands. It has been planted in warmer regions on the mainland and while it has grown, the stalks dont have the same tensile strength and the leaf quality is very different and not suitable for making Hesh.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

The Shoots of the Drudane plant can be used like Bamboo, as they are very strong and rigid, but light and hollow. They are typically not solid enough to use as walls for houses but are often fashioned into movable screens to section off walls, and are made into doors and window shutters and other smaller structures.   The shoots can be used to make strong thin short staves that are a favored weapon of the Mocar Natives.  The Berries can be used in small doses to create a pain reliever though large doses create restlessness and anxiety. The Leaves can be dried and cured and turned into Hesh, a powerful Drug favored by Pirates of the Amrid.

While the other uses of Drudane are useful, it's most lucrative use is the making of Hesh. I norder to get the most out of the leaves, the plants are harvested before they get too tall, cutting them when the plant reaches maximum leaf length at around 2 feet high. The plant will then continue to grow producing a new crown in just a few weeks. Because of this the plants need constant attention to get the best Harvest. The local natives, the Mocar are used for the labour intensive work. When the plants are harvested in this manner, they do not produce berries nor are their stalks large enough to be of much use.

Olivia Dayne, the unofficial ruler of the region employes the Mocar to work the Drudane fields and provides them with things they can only get through her. She uses strong arm tactics to keep them in line and works them relentlessly to harvest the plant.
