Southpass

In the 158th year of king Veit the Orcbreaker. Southpass is the capital settlement of the Dwarven borderlands and stand guard into the dwarven lands of Dwarfheim. The town is a major trade center with wares from the borderlands and more distant human lands that get traded for goods produced in southpass or from other parts of dwarfheim. To the north lead a road to the village of Dun Khar, around half a days trek to the north. From its southern gates lead roads east-southeast about 14 miles to the village of Dwindle Harbor and south around 20 miles to Eberek Hovel. Within sight along the two southern roads lay several dwarf farm homesteads where several hill dwarves and humans toil the land.
There are around 6000 dwarves making their home and living in the town. The dwarves have several different family ties and the kinship of the larger kingdom is divided into many sub-clans, and sub-clans of sub-clans. Dwarves living within or on the outskirts can be seen coming and going to and from, or venturing through the town. Many dwarves moving through the town are heading to different mines or making different business as artisans mainly concerning metalworking, stoneworks and brewing. Other businesses are dealt with by some few dwarven artisans but such wares are also traded from the countryside.
The town mainly comprise of a main tunnel stretching the 6 (or so) miles straight through the mountain, with around 400 ground level apartments lining each side of the long central road, with additional two stories of appartments above ground level. The town make use of a system of chained carts, able to hook on to a pull chain running in loops connected to cogwheels above the central 15 feet part of the road. The chains hang at about 6-7 feet, with chained hoops hanging down to a hight of around 5 feet. The large chains run for around a mile each before being turned around and back to where they begin, turning in a large loop. The gigantic cogwheels pulling the chains are turned by beasts of burden at either end of each of the mile long stretches. Each of the spots where the chains turn back around its cogwheel make up The transit market squares where the citizens of the mountain can conduct business. At these locations carts can be hooked of the chains and the locations act as smaller market squares and trade posts, as well as transit spots for the local denizen. In the middle of town, to were the two innermost chain-cables reach is the central town square, The Southpass forum.

The town have some, or several functionaries, officials, responsible for attending different matters of business within the town.
The clans of Southpass, being folk of Dwarfheim, recognize the rule of the King of Khar Dorum, with the lineage of house of thanes being the hereditary position of thane to act as guardian of the southern borders, ruler of the Borderlands, with Southpass as the seat and base of that inherited undertaking. As such, Southpass is the seat of the recognized thane of the Borderlands.

In times of turmoil most dwarves are expected to take up arms as militia. The relations between the watch and the guard is fairly open and it is not unusual for members of either organisation to transfer to the other depending where the dwarf find itself in life.

The town is home to many houses of several clans. Some almost to few in number to counas the lost Balderk, while some are prominent as the Dankil with their clan holding the borderlands. There are some of the Battlehammers and the Brawnanvils who work within certain areas as well as exchange skill and wisdom. There are vast numbers of Holderhek, who hold to the northern part of town, while the Torunn tend to much of the mineworkings. Some clans have some elements of sub-elements as such as houses within them, with some houses also have sub-elements in form of families. What constitute the different distinctions are somewhat diffuse but number of members do play into the definitions. The different clans have differing degree of influence and responsibility within town. The differences in influence have given members of the different clans positions within town, such as elders who attend more advisory counsellor and spiritual matter and the foremen who are heads of security and military matters, while all of the 6 clans have at least one "peer" that speak for its house i civil matters. The clans do provide sanctuary to those of it's clan it is ill-manered for outsiders to request entry into the clan halls. Still, there are many who belong, or are intermingled, with several clans.
