Archmage Ascension

The Archmage ascension is the ancient tradition of giving the newly elected Archmage the reins over Mervidel. It is a higly symbolic tradtion that needs to be followed to the letter. Failing to do so is believed to bring bad luck to the coming reign.

Ceremony

Preparation

After being elected and approved by the Council of Colleges the new Archmage needs to prepare to take their new position. One of the most important parts is of course making sure that they learn all the necessary texts by heart. Another important part of the preparation is learning how to ride a hippogriff if this was an ability that the new Archmage did not yet have. Creating the garments for the cermony day is also a requirement for the aspiring Archmage.

Parade

On the day of the ceremony the first thing the aspiring Archmage does is getting dressed. For this day there is a special set of robes in glimmering white and gold colours. This garment is hard and expensive to make as it is able to change colour at only a thought of the wearer. In ancient times this garment was created by someone else but in current times it is done by the Archmage himself.
Once everything is in order the Archmage goes to the northern gate of Farmar, the capital of Mervidel. From there they ride on the back of a hippogriff through the main road of the city. It is expected that during this trip the new Archmage ignites all fire braziers along the road by using magic. Once they arrive at the The Archtower the Archmage uses the hippogriff to fly around the tower 20 times, one time for every year they will reign.

Ritual

Once they go inside the Archtower the true ritual begins. The new Archmage goes to the center of the tower. There the archmage changes the colour of their garment to various colours and matches the colours of the braziers in the tower. The order is important and needs to start with blue and end with red. The blue fore example represents the sadness for the ending of the reign of the previous Archmage. The red on the other hand signifies the fiery passion of the new leader.
Once this is done the new Archmage floats up to the top of the tower where the Council of College resides. Here the Archmage is led before the previous one and needs to recite the oath by heart. This takes about half an hour during which is why the preparation for this is so important. When this is completed the previous Archmage hands over the crystal scepter that gives the new Archmage the right to rule.
