Magependria {English} Condition in Nimenra | World Anvil

Magependria {English}

Nekuram houses sickness and diseases that no Human would be able to resist... but some are actually beneficial to Humans yet a danger to the inhabitant demons...
— Everam, Teller of Nimenra
Magependria is a magical disease spread through the bite of a Galati Green Fox. This disease causes nausea, severe lack of coordination, headaches and draining of the user's magic ability during the duration of the disease, for demons. For Humans, however, it has been noted to have permanent magical enhancing effects although after a long period of nausea, spinal and nerve pain and the user's control of their magical abilities are affected as a result.

Transmission & Vectors

The disease transmits from the Galati Green Fox to the demon or human through a bite. Although in the cases of humans being affected it has come from the blood of the fox and never in direct contact though bites.

Causes

How the Galati Green Fox acquires the condition in the first place is unknown. There have been noted cases where demons been bitten and not received any effect at all to those who acquire it and receive severe conditions within the next several days. Mages who have analysed the magical blood of the fox has noted faint traces of magical disturbance. It is believed that some Galati Green Foxes acquire this magical disturbance from something within the Galati Forest which in turn causes the disease. The foxes themselves are not affected in any visible means, making it unknown if you are affected or not by a bite.

Symptoms

The disease affects vary from subject to subject but the most confounding difference exists between demons and humans.
Demons seem to be getting an allergic reaction or a case of server function disability. Most of these effects relate to the head area, with nausea a commonly occurring symptom among every subject. Headaches are also a common occurrence, mostly located to the frontal parts and, possibly the most worrying for all demons, the draining of the user's magic ability. The magical draining is a feeling of fatigue and disconnection with the world around the subject. Some cases have demons feeling a loss of "senses" and spacial awareness. A severe lack of coordination is the most server of these symptoms, forcing the subject to be bedridden in the most extremes where the brain and walking coordination dose simply not work at all.
The few cases of humans acquiring the disease have a very different reaction in comparison. While suffering the consequences of headaches and nausea, humans seem to gain enhanced magical abilities in strong contrast to the loss of magical ability by demons. This manifestation is through "the magical feeling" starting to be stronger like they are "touched" in a central place within themselves. This can also be the feeling of pain all over the body in the tendrils/nerves that extend throughout the body. This pain can be as intense as the feeling of constant burning to the faint feeling of "wrong" within oneself.

Treatment

No known treatment exists for the disease and only through bedrest and mitigating of the symptoms will help. For the demons that are severely affected bed rest is vital to their survival if they also get other sicknesses during the duration of this disease since it already weakens them.

Prognosis

Many survive it and few die. Of the close to a hundred cases a year among demons, it is believed only three or four die in relation to the disease. No human has ever died. Human, however, does get the permanent effect of enhanced magical abilities.

Prevention

The only known way of prevention is though not being bitten.

Cultural Reception

The Urukin has a natural way of dealing with the foxes due to their native close proximity to Galati Forest. While not seem as affected as other demon-kin, they do have those who have gained the server conditions and thus the fox is both seen as a danger, but also like a messenger from their Gods. The Urukin God Ladin of Galati is said to have stayed with the green foxes and given them their green hue to protect them and use them in the War of the Gods. The disease might have been Her way of protecting the creatures according to thoughts from Urukin wise men and women.
