The Unicorn Guard
The Unicorn Guard are an ancient Knightly Order hailing back beyond the Carlegnian Empire. They are famed for their mounts, Unicorns, graceful horse-like beasts beautiful and terrifying in battle in equal measure. They are also known for their masterwork equipment and magical weapons.
They guard the city of Caincross, their ancient seat. This has given them much influence in Lethennor since they guard one of its primary and largest ports. Many a Monarch of Lethennor has been from the Unicorn Guard.
The Unicorn Guard's connection with their Unicorns is more than just ceremonial. Unicorns bond with a Guard for life, with both life-forces being tied together by ancient ritual. When one perishes, so will the other. They also guard the location of the Unicorn groves, where the Unicorns are raised and bred.
Structure
The Unicorn Guard are led by the Chief Guardian, who leads the order and is chosen by the retiring Chief Guardian. A Chief Guardian must always have a successor selected and recorded with the Guard's High Librarian the moment they are given the title, though they may change their choice at any time.
Below the Chief Guardian are specialized titles that serve the Chief Guardian as their advisors and handle any delegated tasks. These titles include:
- High Librarian, who is responsible for the records of the Order
- Grove Guardian, who is responsible for the day to day guarding of the Unicorn Grove
- Chief Tender, who is responsible for the day to day operation of the Unicorn Grove and tending the unicorns in it
- Forgemaster, who is responsible for the logistics and blacksmithing of the Unicorn Guard's specialized gear
- High Augur, who is the chief mage and/or cleric of the order.
Culture
The Unicorn are high and haughty, proud of centuries of tradition and survival.
History
The Unicorn Guard predate even the Carlegnian Empire. What records are public indicate that the Unicorn Guard were once known as the Grove Tenders, and when the Carlegnian Empire came to power they were incorporated and turned into a specialized Order and were tasked with bringing the Unicorns into the Carlegnian Empire's army. The Order became more and more militant as more and more conquest was done, until they became one of many Knightly Orders on Carle.
When the rebellion against the Empire began, the Unicorn Guard were one of the first to openly declare their rebellion, and were key in the founding of Lethennor as a successor state.
