Onyx Starwind

Zenxonian Sprite Rights Leader

We will not back down. We will not be cowed. We are building a better future for our children.
— Onyx Starwind

Early Childhood

Onyx Starwind was born in Queensville, Zenxon. The seventh of eight children, he developed a particularly strong relationship with his older sister, Clover Starwind. Onyx spoke often of his struggle with his identity as a child. As a black-haired sprite, he didn't always fit in with other sprite children, and he never fit in with humans. He attributed his early struggles with the Forest Alliance to his difficulty making friends as a child. Onyx attended Eastwood Elementary and Liberty Junior High, where he was known to be a studious child. Though he excelled particularly well in history and the study of wind magic, he chose not to pursue higher education.

Activism

As a teenager, Onyx became involved in activism. He attended several rallies while in high school, and in 1934, inspired by Flutter Silverglow, he started the Queensville chapter of the Forest Alliance, an organization promoting better living conditions and equal rights for sprites in Zenxon. When his sister, Clover, was his only sibling to join, he began to recruit in sprite temples, as well as in mixed human-sprite temples in the intersectionary neighborhoods of Queensville. It was at one of these temples that he met Laura Newell, an Aspen native who had just begun studying communications at Queensville University.
A thespian and orater, Laura helped Onyx grow the alliance with her inspiring speeches, but the two soon determined that the face of the oganization needed to be a sprite, so Laura took a backseat as Onyx's speechwriter. Early on, she also coached him in speaking, but he soon developed a unique voice that drew more and more people in. Onyx and Laura married in 1936, and took some time away from public activism the following year, when their son, Tobias Cloverwind was born, handing the chapter over to Blossom Beachstone. Two yeas later, Onyx returned to speaking and leading events, often with Laura and his young son at his side. It was no surprise when, in 1944, they moved to Serendipity, where he took a position as a national leader of the Forest Alliance.

Death

Even as we mourn those we lost, we cannot let the destruction of the Sayle Street temple destroy us. We have to keep fighting, fighting for my brother, and everyone else who was there.
Clover Starwind
In 1951, Forest Alliance members from all over the country met at the Sayle Street Temple in Stonewall for an interfaith worship service following a protest march. During the service, the temple was bombed. Onyx and Laura were both killed in the blast. Their son was sent to Dekani to live with his aunt, Olive Newell. Clover later took his place as a national leader in the Forest Alliance.
