Miep Atlam

The girl who learned every language

Miep Atlam was born in Antarand in 1992 on the Leaping Flame compound. Her parents, both sprites, were part of the religious cult by the same name, which had begun during the War of Nideon. Her parents both died in 1999, when the cult was brought down by Antaran authorities. Miep was then adopted by Ayan Tyeen and Leo Tyeen in Forgecard Falls.

Though she had been born into the Leaping Flame cult, Miep later converted to the Epaluno faith of her adopted mother, though she did not complete the entire ceremony to officially become Pelan. A native Roex speaker, she was particularly taken with the Pelan concept of using a common language whenever possible. She dedicated much of her childhood to learning the various languages of her siblings and was known for taking extensive notes on the linguistic abilities of her friends.

As a teenager, Miep developed an interest in the language developed by Suracity founder Rotita Tyinagra. She also became increasingly interested in the Suracity idea of summoning gods. At age twenty, she successfully summoned Seth in an attempt to reach her birth parents. Though Seth did not grant her wish, he did agree to "employ" her and granted hr a magical connection to the balance of life and death.

As an adult, Miep earned a career as a language teacher. Working alongside the Mermish teachers of Antaran Creole, she helped found the Forgecard Falls Language Academy, where she taught for twenty years. She also conducted extensive etymolgical research.

In her thirties, Miep took to exploring other religions, in an increasingly erratic fashion. She took a sabbatical to study at the Virginia Bleek Observatory, and while there took a sidetrip to Fire Hollow. Upon her return to Forgecard Falls, she began to preach about an impending imbalance, which she claimed she could feel in her bones. Many people thought she had lost her mind in her visit to the hollow, while others believed she had merely returned to the faith of her parents. Though she continued to teach in Forgecard Falls, she spent summers in Auras, which was attracting a growing number of doomsayers.

In 2032, Astromythologists discovered the Homeworld, Milon, setting off the Great Magic War. Miep's language skills made her an asset in the Nideon army as an interrogator. It was in the process of learning the language of Milon soldiers and speaking to one such prisoner that she met her future wife. Helping the other woman escape, they traveled to the planet The Overlap, where she taught her lover her own brand of magic. As it had in Auras, Miep's charisma drew followers to her, and she founded a secret group to keep magic alive during the war and to continue to maintain the balance of the world after it. This group became the Shadowcasters.
