Bontoreed Gorrigbolid

Bontoreed On Gorrigbolid (a.k.a. Reed)

Born in 1948 in Kulilia, Suxad, Bontoreed Gorrigbolid, more commonly known as Reed, is the son of Suxadi farmhands. Growing up on the farm where his father, and sometimes his mother, worked made Reed's family part of the lower class of Suxad, despite the fact that both his parents attended Faraday School for Wizards. Reed's father, with a natural gift for plant magic, earned himself permanent employment on the farm of a wealthier Suxadi family. Though Reed grew up playing with the children of this family, and well-treated by their parents, the difference in social status remained. Reed's mother, a gifted seamstress, is often commissioned to create costumes for theaters in larger cities. Nevertheless, it was Reed's brother, a talented athlete and shifter, who was always expected to bring the family greater respectability.   Having inherited his father's gift for plant magic, Reed has always been expected to become a healer, if not a farmer, like his father. Though Reed has always entertained the idea of learning magic beyond his natural gift, most people in his life talk to him as if this is impossible. After all, despite having attended Faraday themselves, neither of his parents ever extended their magical gifts much beyond their natural abilities. Nevertheless, it was likely Reed's ambition that got him accepted to attend Faraday.   Growing up, Reed was taught to take pride in his family and his heritage. They may not have been wealthy, but his family were hard workers with respectable jobs, and he would always be expected to uphold that. This fierce pride and nationalism sometimes set him against other children, such as Ludvik and Zohar Daniels, two Elf children of the farmer across the river. Once, as a child, Reed got into a discussion about Suxadi politics, specifically the question of allowing refugees from other countries in Suxad. With Reed arguing against it and Zohar for it, the discussion soon soured into an argument which eventually spawned a mutual dislike. In the years since then, Reed has come to understand that he was merely spouting propaganda that he had been taught, and perhaps the girl was as well.   This realization came around the end of his first term at Faraday. While studying the Pelan in his history class at school, Reed discovered that the practices he read about matched up with what little he knew about his quiet and secretive roommate, Mat Truuit. Furthermore, he discovered that Mat looked like Tsia Xitano. When confronted with the question of his ethnicity, Mat refused to answer, likely because Reed had already spoken aloud much of the anti-Pelan propaganda he learned as a child. Since then, he has tried to find a course of study through which he can better find truth.
