The Goose

"Honk!"
-The Goose voices his gratitude for his most recent tribute of bread, as is his birthright   No one knows who or what The Goose actually is but it's fairly clear that it's much more than a normal goose. The Goose hangs around Nexus and is generally seen coming up with (often comical) schemes to get more bread into it's belly. The Goose has coerced adventurers into working for it, formed a toll road (5 breadcrumbs per person), and stolen sandwiches from people's hands it later enjoyed while reading the newspaper and having a tea from a cup. In truth, The Goose is the Great Old One Q̵̛͔̻͓̹̈́̋̓̈́͝͝'̶̡͉̞̞͙̩̪̱̗̩̱̥̥̃́̽̉̐͐͆̇x̶͚͊á̶̬̺̗̼̃̏̍͆͝k̴͓̲̗̘̮͚̲͈̰͖̮̹̼̎͂̎̄̓̚̕t̴̛͙̝̝̯̜̺̳̜̞͍́̆̍̉͆̽̇̊̿̊̐͘ḩ̷̢͕̺̥̜͎̮̮̮͇͍̈́́̆̈́̉̊͊̋̉̕̚͜͝, whose motives remain an unintelligible as anything else a Great Old Ones does to mortal comprehension.   Table of Contents

History

Shadows Unleashed Campaign

Not everyone in the Adventurer's Guild shared the same opinion of The Goose. The Guild's leaders told their juniors to leave it alone (though they refused to ever state why). It was also noted The Goose once pecked Iskierka's hand hard enough to draw blood yet she did not retaliate.   New members had a habit of being the latest victims of The Goose's shenanigans, which typically involved being tripped or shoved into the Guild's pond. Leliana also claimed The Goose once attacked her on her way to her church from a bakery, stealing the loaf of bread she was taking to the service.   Despite its usual behavior, The Goose has been an ally to the Guild from time to time. It assisted Gentleman Jack when he needed to avoid an officer of the courts, protected citizens discreetly during The Battle of Inkhear, and helped Jack's familiar get his warning about the Gravecannon to the Guildhall.   Nonetheless, the Headhunters found The Goose's usual antics comical until they said hello to The Goose in Infernal and Abyssal, and The Goose responded "Hi!" back in both languages. From that point on, they give The Goose offerings of cheesy garlic bread every time it made an appearance to placate it. A fair amount of cowering was also involved.   This ended up being a good call when The Goose turned into a huge, five-headed version of itself (the Honkdra) and assisted them in the assault on Levira's flying castle. It gave Hugh and Leliana a ride to the castle, then assisted Iskierka with battling the castle's external defenses while the Headhunters attacked the inside. When the adventurers succeeded in destroying Levira and the castle began to fall from the sky, The Goose also assisted them in escaping.

Tales of Tavern Town Campaign

A few years after Levira's defeat, Vinnie Vice begged a ride off The Goose to get a ride to Tavern Town for their yearly Battle of the Bars competition. Along the way, the pair were waylaid by a wild magic storm. The storm knocked them out of the sky, scattering a collection of coins The Goose had been carrying and infusing Vinnie with the power of wild magic. Figuring that Vinnie, being Vinnie, was probably alright, The Goose set about finding its lost coins.   The Goose spent a few days figuring out a locating spell and headed for the closest collection of its lost Goose Coins. It came out of some bushes to find that Vinnie and his new traveling companions had located several of the coins. It approached one of these companions, All Smite and kept pecking at his pack until the paladin got the message. Having picked up items transported to Nexus by the wild magic storm, The Goose found that its pack was now too full to hold the coins. It threw out a number of magic items that it considered junk to make space, taking the coins and heading for the next batch it sensed while the adventurers picked up the items it had abandoned.   A few days later, The Goose landed on Kaylin's back (which she failed to notice) as the centaur woman made her way back to her adventuring companions after being separated from them. When they arrived, The Goose motioned for the other adventurers not to mention its presence. The group left the orc camp they'd been staying at and rode down the road for several hours before The Goose let out a loud, "Honk!" and startled Kaylin. During their latest adventure, All Smite had won more Goose Coins by besting an orc at arm wrestling. The Goose once again emptied its knapsack of excess items before taking the coins and flying off.   The Goose made a brief appearance after the party had traveled to Valhalla from a wizard's tower, acquiring Goose Coins vomited up by Kiri during their visit there. These coins were promptly collected by The Goose who, as usual, left magic items behind before taking the coins and leaving for parts unknown.   It's next and more prominent appearance came when the group traveled to House Forst, an estate divided in two by two quarreling siblings. Kaylin was working for the sister, Syl Forst, who believed someone on her staff intended to murder her. While Kaylin explored the house questioning the staff, she spotted The Goose waddling down the hall. The Goose beckoned for Kaylin to follow it, waddling down to Syl Forst's chambers. Syl's personal maid appeared terrified of The Goose while Syl herself leapt from her seat and kneeled as deeply as she could, forehead touching the floor, while referring to The Goose as "My Lord". She had prepared a number of Goose Coins as an offering and also offered to sacrifice Kaylin for speaking to The Goose too casually, though The Goose honked a negative at this idea and Syl seemed to believe that Kaylin was The Goose's noble steed.   The Goose discarded more magic items from its knapsack, which Kaylin promptly collected, before hopping on Kaylin's back and tapping her side with its foot and honking, presumably meaning "giddy up". The pair rode out into the woods, coming to a circle of dead trees. The Goose hopped off Kaylin's back and pecked the center of the circle before stepping back, causing an inky black dot to appear. The dot rapidly expanded like water as a black shape rose out of the portal to the Far Realm, sounds of screams and whispers of mad horror echoing from the portal and scraping against Kaylin's mind. The Goose tossed a small bag of Goose Coins to the shoggoth it had summoned, which promptly sank back into the portal before the gateway closed. The Goose then waddled off into the woods somewhere as Kaylin returned to the Forst manor, eager to forget whatever she had just seen.   When Noxidus, the Green Shadow Dragon left its lair in search of Kaylin, The Goose took the opportunity to sneak inside and remove several Goose Coins that had made their way into the dragon's horde. Not long after that, it collected the last of its lost coins from a community of xorn before using them to summon forth Velvet as its new servant. Though The Goose didn't intend it, it inadvertently saved many lives in the communities surrounding Tavern Town when Rhith noticed its presence and ordered Sindri to leave the area before potentially gaining Q̷̡̟̺̤͎̩̓̀̿̽̎̊͜͝͝ͅ'̴͓̮̣͎̾̅̊͑̕x̷̧̩̼̊́̎̀͝á̷̛̯̠̬̘͙̣̜̳͉͊̽̀̏̏̓k̶̰̉͆̃̿̿̓̿̏̉̀̌̎̊͠t̴̨̙̞̋h̴̦̅̀'̴̛̛͍̯̤̹̙̈́́̈́̊̅̀͑̓̄͋s̶̖̫͔̤̗̬̦̝̈̓́̑̈͊͛̿ͅ ire.

The Goose Makes a Necklace

Not long after the events surrounding Tavern Town, The Goose (with Velvet's assistance) summoned Kishin and contracted the fiend's services. It also took the time to track down the freshly reincarnated Vinnie Vice and rope him into yet another adventure. With this trio assisting it, The Goose created a magical necklace (and assisted saving a nation from certain doom in the process, purely by coincidence) that would allow it to speak directly with mortals when it wanted to (without the mere presence of its speech killing them).
