Dumathoin, Dwarven God of Mining

Known as the Keeper of Secrets Under the Mountain, Dumathoin is the dwarven god of mining. All treasures that can be found beneath the earth, from the simplest metals to the most priceless gems, fall under his domain. Though he is most commonly known for these aspects, he also holds a degree of power over the dead whose bodies are buried within the earth. Dwarves often pray to Dumathoin for good fortune as well as from protection from the many dangerous peoples and creatures that lurk within the Underdark and sometimes make their way into dwarven tunnels.   Table of Contents

History

Early Nexus History

Many millennia ago, a dwarf king on Nexus declared Dumathoin to be his patron god rather than selecting one of the more popular and more commonly worshipped dwarven deities. He commissioned a set of flawless gemstones that would crown an altar to Dumathoin in the heart of his city, an act that so impressed Dumathoin the god himself made an appearance to bless the gems. But these actions did not go unnoticed the wizard Quintus Karesh, who had his own designs for the gems.   Karesh came to the dwarven king under a guise of friendship to earn the king's goodwill and trust. He bided his time, waiting for years until the time to strike was perfect. One morning the king awoke to find that Karesh was gone and the blessed gems were missing. Karesh used the flawless gems to create a set of powerful artifacts, the Quintus Gems, in a bid to obtain ultimate power. This had not gone unnoticed by Dumathoin, who granted the gems a degree of sentience that would allow them to choose their wielders. Karesh hardly qualified as worthy in the eyes of Dumathoin and the gems were now an extension of his will, causing the wizard to go mad. He tried to find a way to bend them to his will until his dying day, convinced that together they would provide him with ultimate power.   When Karesh passed, the gems were scattered as his estate was liquidated. But Dumathoin's influence ensured that they would always arrive in the hands of someone worthy whenever and wherever their power was needed. Over the centuries, tales began to spread across the lands of heroes who were often depicted with a gemstone embedded in their weapons. These stories eventually made their way to unholy ears and attracted the attention of yet another villain, the archdevil Moloch.   Moloch was involved in a plot to betray his master, Asmodeus, in a plan to seize rulership of the Nine Hells. He knew that Asmodeus was not to be underestimated and needed every advantage he could muster if he wished for his plan to succeed. Moloch was ultimately stopped by the current generation of gemholders before it became necessary for Dumathoin to step in, although one of the gems was destroyed in the process.   Karesh's hypothesis that the eight Quintus Gems could provide ultimate power was in fact correct, but with the gems now numbering only seven it ceased to be an issue. Until something happened that not even Dumathoin had anticipated. At the passing of its latest owner, the White Gem took little time finding a new partner in its old partner's ward. But it was not, in fact, the young woman who was selected by the child she was carrying. As her pregnancy advanced, that child became children as a pair of twins grew within her. And as the embryo had split, so too did the White Gem as it divided itself into the Gold and Silver Gems. With eight gems once again in existence, the ultimate power a full set could provide was back on the table.

Quest for the Quintus Gems Campaign

Sadly, recent affairs in the nation of Jezero where the gems were located meant few were in the possession of worthy wielders. None were to be found on Nexus, not within traveling distance as new dark forces began to focus their attention on the gems, so Dumathoin was forced to look to other worlds. He found what he was seeking in a group of adventurers who had recently helped dwarven brothers reclaim an ancient lost mine. Disguising himself as a simple scholar, Dumathoin sent a summons to the Barrel Boys and hired the group to investigate a ruin he claimed he could not visit himself without missing a conference. Truly, Dumathoin had moved the tomb of a former gemholder, which still contained the Black Quintus Gem, to this world.   Before moving the tomb, Dumathoin created the Seeking Stone that could locate the Quintus Gems and placed Wang inside it as the stone's guardian. He then hid the stone inside the tomb where the Barrel Boys would find it. Once the adventurers entered the tomb, he moved it through the Elemental Plane of Earth to Nexus. With the Black Gem, Wang, and a mystery now in-hand, the Barrel Boys set off to discover the history of the Quintus Gems. Dumathoin kept an eye on them during their adventures, though his direct intervention was not necessary until the very end of their adventure.   When the archdevil Glasya appeared and claimed the Red Gem, Dumathoin stood behind the adventurers she faced with his mere presence making it clear he would allow her to claim no more. He then congratulated the Barrel Boys for their success in protecting the Quintus Gems and stopping the Blood War from spilling over into Nexus. The adventurers had many questions but Dumathoin merely assured them that everything was happening "right on schedule" before making his departure.
