Remington Kingdom

Nevurdul's beacon of hope

Deep within the heart of Nevurdul, serving as a testament to the capabilities of civilization, stands Remington Kingdom. Over 100 years in the making, Remington acts as a safe haven for those lucky enough to reside there. Some in Nevurdul regard the kingdom as an escape from the turmoil of reality; a fantasy. Others see it as the best chance Nevurdul has at becoming something more.

Architecture

Remington's architectural design focuses on the use of stone, due to its abundance in the area. One of the kingdom's greatest architectural marvels is its castle. Constructed during the 2nd Queen's reign, it has stood the test of time. Its interior and exterior are adorned with blue and white accents, and it stands at an impressive 17 meters tall, nearly as tall as the kingdom's recently-constructed walls. These walls, which extend 20 meters high, encircle the kingdom with several feet of stone, protecting it from even the most tenacious of intruders.
As far as the rest of the kingdom's architecture, homes and smaller businesses are typically constructed with the wood from the surrounding forest. Thanks to Remington's excellent carpenters, these buildings are finely-crafted, from the Remington Stable, to a lone man's home by the farms.
The roads and paths are made of cobblestone scraps, recovered during the construction of the walls. Several main roads weave throughout the kingdom's grounds, providing enough space for 2-3 carriages to pass through side-by-side. These roads connect to smaller walkways that are meant for single carriages, or small wagons.

Economy

Remington's economy comes primarily from its trade. Not only does it reserve a portion of its territory for agriculture, providing it with more than enough food to feed its citizens and trade with outsiders, but it also acts as one of the most lucrative trading hubs for Nevurdul's people. Many outside settlements engage in regular trade with Remington, giving the kingdom connections to just about every major power on the island.

History

Remington Kingdom was founded approximately 143 years ago, in the year 1075, by The First Queen. Most records of Remington's early history are lost to time, but it's clear that the intention was always for the leader of Remington to be the firstborn daughter of the following generation. This tradition has remained intact over the years.
The 2nd Queen, Dorothy Remington, played a vital role in the expansion of Remington from a large settlement to a truly organized civilization. She made wise decisions on what areas needed to be developed for their people to survive. It was clear based on how many texts she preserved, that Queen Dorothy has great aspirations for what the Remington name could become.
The 3rd Queen, Sylvia Remington, thrusted the kingdom into the forefront of Nevurdul's politics, and crafted its now-famous army of soldiers. Other settlements had begun to rise to power throughout the island, and it was Sylvia who first established the kingdom as a place to be known. She began recruiting able bodies within the kingdom to become soldiers, defending against bandits and other enemies of the kingdom.
The 4th Queen, Margaret Remington, rose to power during an especially prosperous time in Remington's history. Because of this, Queen Margaret chose to share the wealth of the kingdom with the rest of Nevurdul. This brought Remington praise from those who were struggling, and would ultimately allow for the construction of new settlements all across the land.
The 5th and current Queen, Elysia Remington, has been in power for 5 years, and has clearly chosen to take a more defensive approach with Remington's resources. The Haven Project, a massive construction undertaking to create a wall around the kingdom, sent a message to everyone in Nevurdul that Remington would only fight for itself, as made clear when it did nothing to retaliate against Liberty Castle.

Culture

Remington's culture tends to change, sometimes drastically, as one Queen steps down and the next-in-line takes control. The greatest constant is the kingdom's motivation to spread civilization throughout Nevurdul. This ideal has persisted through every Queen's reign, and remains in the hearts and minds of many of Remington's people.

Environment

The kingdom is placed in one of the many thick, oak forests around Nevurdul. Woods cover the southern and western sides, while the northern and eastern sides connect to the open, grassy plains toward Nevurdul's center. The terrain was chosen for its abundance of water below the surface, providing plenty of water for the kingdom's citizens. The flat location also provides easy access to stone which, as stated above, makes of much of the major landmarks in the kingdom.

Businesses & Public Structures

Remington Kingdom is divided into different districts, each district providing necessary resources for its people, such as trade, housing, grain, metals, etc. These districts have been named after important figures in Remington's history, mainly chosen by its past Queens. Many of the Queens chose to name their districts after one of their Guardians, or their Kinbearer.

  • Castle Remington: The crowning jewel of the kingdom, Castle Remington's foundation was created by the First Queen, and built upon throughout each Queen after, becoming the marvel of construction it is today.
    • Castle Dungeons: The old dungeons beneath the castle, where the worst of the worst criminals are kept, never to see the outside world again.
  • The Square: Known only as the Square, it acts as the central housing for the majority of Remington's citizens. The district encompasses the immediate surroundings of the castle, and was the first "district" to be created.
  • Claiborne District: Named after the First Queen's only known Guardian, Claiborne District holds the militia-related businesses and buildings, such as armories, barracks, and training grounds.
  • Dorothy District: Named by Queen Sylvia after her mother, Dorothy District holds the expansive fields of various crops that act as the backbone of Remington's trade, just as Dorothy was the backbone of what put Remington on the map.
  • Barnette District: Named after the prominent noble family, Barnette District acts as the main trading hub for the kingdom. Shops of all kinds base here, including HansPuckett and VendTech.
  • Stonefoot District: Named after the famous Lecter "The Great" Stonefoot thanks to his assistance in The Remington Incident, Stonefoot District houses the quarries, craftsmen, metalworkers, and other "heavy-duty" businesses.

Population

The people of Remington Kingdom are relatively diverse, but mainly consist of Humans and Elves. Servos are treated as servants and workers, and Zso are completely banned from the kingdom, apart from special circumstances.
