Personal history
Haley was born Jaen Hayleigh Doe towards the southern border of Crewforte. As a young girl growing up in a rough town, she learned from a young age to fend for herself -- especially as her parents were too busy working and drinking to pay much attention to her. Much of her time as a teenager was spent hanging around the tavern by the river at the center of town, waiting for the guards to be drunk enough to ignore her presence there as an underaged person.
At age fourteen, Haley awoke as a Magi through a series of broken glasses and singed family carpets. As a child of the Querian Empire, she was quickly enrolled into the town's Magi School in the northern suburbs of town and remained there to live and study until "true adulthood" (25 years old in Querian culture.

Unfortunately, it was not to be. At 23 years old, an alarm was raised within the school that a Goran, one of the Querian boogymen, had been sighted in the school. The building was locked down and Haley was meant to return home to her parents for the duration of the alert -- but her parents had long since left town without telling her where they were.
Haley was stranded -- that is, until a handsome stranger offered her a place to stay for the night. The man claimed to be an old Magi tutor at the school, and though Haley was suspicious she was confident enough in her own power to go along with him.
Kian was friendly. Kind and considerate; but something was off. One night she caught him drinking blood from a coffee glass like it was nothing, and instead of being repulsed, she was intrigued. More strange phenomena showed themselves: hair she'd cut, grown back the next day. Strange dreams that felt like memories, of elongated fingernails and iron on her tongue.
The Goran who had been sighted was Haley herself. Kian had taken her in to protect her from hunters, and now she could never show herself in public again.
Education
Haley completed the first decade of her education in Crewforte General School. At the time she performed below average, especially towards her teenage years, as teachers say she was 'distractable' and 'disinterested' in the subject matter, more content to doodle in the margins of her book or stare out of the window than to actually do the work.
While this didn't change enormously after joining the School of Magi in regular lessons, Haley quickly found her feet in the arcane. Her talents in Éla were apparent from the start and she excelled in control and attunement. Before her awakening, she was projected to be among the top percentile of Éla users in the school.
