Cybernetic Augmentations

Cybernetic augmentations are the first and oldest type of true augmenation and is considered the successor of medical prosthesis. In general modern cybernetic augmentations are bio-compatible machines that are integrated into the human physiology.

The dawn of transhumanism

By 2040 after a long history of improvements and optimizations the first sophisticated medical prosthesis, called 'cybernetic prosthesis' at the time, had advanced far enough that someone with an prosthesis would be superior to native, unmodified person. This is considered the point where the first true augmentations had been achived. To reflect this development manufacturers were quick to name thier wares cybernetic augmentations and market them as upgrades. From there on non-therapeutic applications of cybernetic prosthesis and cybernetic augmentations to “improve” healthy individuals steadily increased year by year.

Types of Cybernetic Augmentations

The class of cybernetic augmentation is by far the most diverse.

Chrome Cybernetic Augmentations
Chrome cybernetic augmentations, commonly just called chromes, are an obvious solution on how to improve raw performence. Simply replaceing a biological part with a superior machine part is the quinessence of chromes. Chromes are unmatched in power and functionality. However the drawback is the sheer invasiveness and immense impact on the metabiological holistic integrity.
A relatively new field within chromes are cybernetic organs. While the idea has been arround for over a century, the realization of an entirely non-biological organ (eg. a high-performence pump instead of a heart) while also achieving bio-compatiblity only happend in the early 22nd century.

Deep-tissue Implanted Cybernetic Augmentations
The very most of deep-tissue implanted cybernetic augmentations are either some form of data processor, sensor or transmitter. These cybernetic augmentations are very small and compact chips or probes, rarely larger than a few centimeters across. Data processors often are implanted directly into the brain, similarly other deep-tissue implants are placed in or near important structures according to thier purpose.
Sensors can be subdivided into endo-sensors that monitor an internal parameter (eg. heart rate) and exo-sensors that sense an external stimulus (eg. radio waves).

Networked Cybernetic Augmentations
Networked cybernetic augmentations are a special type of cybernetic that requires an active connection to an external network, called a Cy-Net, to run at full fuctionality or even work at all. Prerequisite to use networked cybernetics is an implanted communications suite and subscription to a Cy-Net provider. Where an implanted math-subprocessor actually runs calculations, a networked general purpose chip sends a inquiry to a powerful server which returns an answer. The trade-off that networked cybernetic augmentations make is for the quasi unlimited processing power a Cy-Net offers compared to an implanted processor is the complete dependence on the Cy-Net.
