Arcanic brands are created by imbuing specific magics within inks and tattooing the symbology onto the person's skin to bind the magics to that person. The branding process is strenuous on the receiver's body and most people cannot handle it. In rare cases, individuals can have more than one brand; only individuals with an exceptional constitution can endure the ordeal. Brands can be removed but it is a long and painful process, taking up to a week to complete depending on the complexity of the original brand. An individual who can create and remove arcanic brands is known as a brander.
There are several types of arcanic brands with varying degrees of utility. The most general classifications are described below.

• Defined Arcanic Brand: The most common brand grants the ability to cast certain tiered spells daily and potentially a zeroth tier spell at will. These brands utilize a mage's primary conduit and, if the branded individual is not a mage, it uses the caster's body as a conduit. Guilds without significant clout often use a defined brand as a make-shift faction mark.
• Faction Mark: This is a custom arcanic brand designed with a faction in mind. They can also augment the individual in various ways outside of tiered spellcasting. Faction marks have consistent styles and magical signatures that are difficult to duplicated without knowing the exact process. Factions often hire qualified branders to work exclusively on their faction marks.
• Custom Designs: It is difficult to find a brander who will work on a custom design and even more difficult to find one that will succeed. It is a dangerous and extremely costly process. Branders able to fulfill these requests are highly sought after and never want for money.

Manufacturing process

Most brands take a few hours at most to tattoo. Some complicated faction brands can take a full day. The process is similar to a normal tattoo with ritual casting interrupting the process at intervals.

Significance

The significance of an individual's arcanic brand varies vastly from person to person. Many factions have unique abilities or spells imbued into their brand. Outside of factions, few brands have unique abilities and most grant spells useful in daily life. The most requested brand allows the individual to cast the zeroth tier spell prestidigitation, sometimes including a first tiered spell with a daily casting.

The branding process uses the same inks used in inscribing spells on parchment. Defined brands also require a written copy of the spell, this can be provided with a spell scroll or a spell book. Branders often have a spell book with a small collection of spells.
