Strana

Once a world of slaves, always a world of slaves.

Slavery has always been a part of Strana. Just because its supposedly better now doesn't make it not slavery. We are still living our lives in chains underneath the boots of those who think themselves our betters.

Strana was a slave planet ages ago but centuries ago the slaves revolted and rebuilt the entire caste system of the planet. When everything leveled out decades after the revolt, there were still caste systems and slave systems in place on the planet but the slave trade remained on the planet only and any slave had the ability to rise through the ranks.

There are six total castes on the planet since the system was reorganized. While many families of the higher level castes bear surnames that are their own, families of the lower level castes are more often given the name of their caste as a surname at birth. The six castes are as follows, in order from high to low: Risehigh, Coinfinger, Warclan, Warslave, Pennydown, Chainborn.

The Castes of Strana

High Caste: Risehigh

The highest caste is Risehigh. They are those who have the power on Strana in all areas and who ultimately wield the reins on the planet. While many now can trace their lineage back to the former slaves that became the leaders of the rebellion that broke the old rule on the planet, there are others who can trace their line back to what is called the Old Blood of Strana. The Old Blood are the families who held power before the ancient revolts but not those who fought against them. They are instead descended from those few families who chose to back the slave revolt and support it.

Upper Caste: Coinfinger

The next caste below Risehigh is Coinfinger. They are the merchant lords on Strana, those who pull the purse strings and control the money behind most things on the planet. Almost all of the Risehigh families have at least one person from Coinfinger working for them to handle their finances.

War Caste: Warclan

Warclan are essentially the standing army of Strana. While many are descended from those who fought in the old uprising, there are also many who have risen up from the lower ranks to a place within one of the Clans. There are more than a hundred different Clans on Strana and they frequently have Melees within their own Clans or Grand Melees between multiple Clans to give lower members of the Clans a chance to rise up and become a full-blooded warrior...plus allowing them a chance to control one of the giant mechs that have always been the major battle gear on Strana. The Warclans are also responsible for the Warfights that are one of the major points of entertainment on Strana in its capital city.

Upper Slave Caste: Warslave

Warslaves are specifically slaves that are born into a Clan or have been bought by a Clan or sold into it. While some slaves are capable of being fighters in combat suits, more often they are simply staff for the Clan depending on what is needed at the time. From cooks to cleaning staff to mechanics, Warslaves fill many ranks but most members of the Clans view them as equal members as anyone else. Though there are also several who view them as not worthy of the Clan and depending on the individual Clan, this can end up with a variety of behavior and feelings.

Lowest Caste: Pennydown

Pennydown are the lower level reflection of the Coinfinger caste. Many of them work for either Clans or members of Coinfinger (thus also working for a Risehigh family) but they largely deal with the Lower Slave Caste. Usually, the way that anyone rising from the lower slave caste is through one of the Pennydown, either through a deal being made or the Pennydown owning them and selling them to one of the higher castes - more often than not into one of the Clans.

Lower Slave Caste: Chainborn

Chainborn are the lowest of the low and they serve. That is what they do. Many live their lives in service to the Pennydown caste but there are members of the Chainborn in service to almost every caste on Strana in some form or fashion. The only time the Chainborn usually rise in rank is through the Clans but there have been some Chainborn who have managed to climb up through other castes. One major thing about the Chainborn is that they usually all bear the name Chainborn instead of an actual surname. Some who join the Clans choose to take on various Clan names and others who win their freedom to other castes choose their own names.
