Session Report 43 - Tales of Old Sin Oro

General Summary

"To me, Sin Oro was a place of community and individuality as one. I didn't need to know the name of the woman down the street to know she was a great cook, nor the name of the man from the school to know that he was a dancer at heart. And that I didn't know their names didn't stop me from supporting them to my fullest. Didn't stop them from supporting me. I was at sea by the time of the fall, but no matter how far we were, we all felt the loss of that joint individuality."
-Horatio

Recruits

The senior crew of The Drifters are about town looking for recruits for their crew. They pick up two new hires and attract a fair amount of attention from a variety of folk, some of who consider the opportunity but have not yet decided. The first of the new hires is Sinkbasothei, a Bodari from the Five Fingers Club who recently tried and failed to kill Lazzo. She joins the crew on the condition that if they encounter again, they'll fight him. The second recruit is Biff Longsteel, from the previous night.
A teenage Salimstinian girl also approaches, asking a few questions about what kind of person they're looking for to recruit before scurrying off. Gunther has the intuition that she might be back.

Tales of Old Sin Oro

After spending the morning and early afternoon recruiting, the group splits to go about their own business in the town. Laire brings Gunther with him to The Drawback, where the elf buys better armour for a reasonable price. Gunther then heads to work on repairing the damage The Flying Flagon sustained on The Dread Sea. Meanwhile, Locke goes to do some research on magical prosthetics and comes up with a list of materials needed for a good prosthetic: wood struck by lightning, a vial of fey blood for the enchantment, 3 gemstones for enchanting, and some minorly magical metal for the hinges.
Ramone heads to get his fortune told, finding a round old woman who seems to predict things just almost correct, calling Ramone such things as Raymond, Rambo, and Roemon before he even introduces himself. The teller portends danger as a shark with many teeth, and treasure as a solid 4/10.
Grov, meanwhile, spends some time connecting with the locals and getting in touch with his Sin Oran roots. He at one point sits down with an old man named Horatio, easily 70, who lived in Sin Oro before the fall. Horatio is more than happy to share stories of the old place, and of how community and individual both thrived. Horatio himself admits that he cast aside his own last name since his brother aided the Harps, and the name is stained. Grov engages with this, though explains why he chooses to keep his last name despite his own family's involvement in the downfall. Horatio mentions that there's a green dragonborn named Orville who lives here and is a direct descendent of Hakramaul The Saviour, the despotic leader of modern-day Sin Oro. Grov wishes to talk to this man, though Horatio warns him that he's likely to be incredibly drunk, as the drink is the only thing that keeps him from his shame.

Sangria!

Sangria is an appropriately fruity bar, and where the group decides to drink for the night. Grov is a bit confused, having been brought up quite sheltered. Laire, on the other hand, fits right in and many a drink is bought for him. The group has an altogether good time.

And What of Francisco?

Laire pulls Locke aside, hoping to speak to him in private. He raises concerns about opposing Francisco. He speaks of why he, Chuck, and Ramone were arrested in the first place, and how no matter where they turned, even in Port Viola, Harpsbilge's strongest port on the Seas, there was support for Francisco. The Jack of Pirates has many allies, and Laire worries that going against Francisco will make more enemies than the group can handle. Locke hears this and considers going back on the decision to try to become Pirate King, but does not yet choose to speak with the senior crew about it.

A Widower's Dream

Gunther heads to talk to Lou, taking Grov with him as support. Lou is feeling terrible. Not only did she fail to stop Heartstopper's success, she feels her presence and her lack of warnings caused the tragedy at the hands of Pilmouth. Gunther tries to teach her that sometimes it's best to let go of these things. He pulls out a locket, inside is a rendition of a half-elven woman - Cornelia - who Gunther explains was his fiance. She died, he says, while he wasn't there for her. But hanging onto your role in something like that can only last for so long. It's ok to move on, even if you don't forgive yourself. Lou is unconvinced and remains in emotional turmoil. Gunther and Grov decide to give it some time.
The two then head to the city's Church of Zarkina, where the two inquire about channelling the storm and The Eye of The Storm, as was the focus at The Stormcallers' Temple. While nothing too specific is learned, Grov is given some more pointers on channelling the storm, and there are rumours of an isle on the Northern Wild Sea where there are zealots of Zarkina's storm domain who summon storms. Perhaps they know something.
Later that day, Gunther begins to write in his new diary, titling it: "A Widower's Dream - The Journal of Gunther Winchester".

Helena

Locke goes with Graham to find Peter's sister. Asking around town, he comes upon a bakery - Kneaded Delights - where a woman fitting her description is to be found. Locke makes a bit of pleasant conversation with her before breaking the news. The woman, Helena Alverez (no longer Hoffin - she's married), takes a moment before the reality of her dear brother's death sets in. She invites the two inside and asks a few questions about how it happened, growing sadder with each answer and allowing the reality to sink in. She then reads the last letter that Peter sent her, which, among many other musings and optimistic statements, exclaims excitement about the fact that he had finally found a crew, and states that he thinks Locke could "really be the next Pirate King!". This shakes the captain quite a bit, and Graham tries his best to comfort both him and Helena. Helena asks a favour - that Locke and Grahm do a few deliveries for her, as she can't bring herself to stand much right now. The two accept readily and ready themselves to deliver some baked goods as the final part to the last loose string.
