Sin Oro

"We will FIGHT! Until our dying breath, we will never be sil-"
Last words of Emmanuel Valdena, former Sin Oran leader, as he is executed by firing squad

Intro

Sin Oro is a nation that was recently conquered by Harpsbilge. It previously held wealth, alongside ideals of freedom and democracy. Now its pride is shattered and its people are hopeless. It is ruled by a despotic dictator who gives no aid to the needy people.

Geography

Sin Oro is an island on the northwest edge of the Crown Ocean. It is roughly 500 square miles. It is generally mountainous and filled with lakes and rivers. The capital city, Perdida, is located in the southeastern segment of the country, about 50 miles inland. It is located in the flattest region of the country and is surrounded by farmland and vineyards.
Farmable land is not readily available, so livestock is more common. The mountains are often filled with precious and semiprecious metal, most commonly silver and titanium. This is exploited by the massive mining industry.

History

The history of Sin Oro dates back nearly 350 years to 577 HB. A now-fallen inland nation was having a violent civil war on ethnic lines. The losing side elected to flee overseas and start a new nation instead of facing the wrath and oppression of the winners. So Sin Oro was founded, under the principles of freedom and a new political system called democracy.
Though Sin Oro did not flourish, its experiment of democracy did succeed for a time. After about a century, some changes needed to be made in order to keep the country running, so people's democratic rights were violated in return for longer-lasting governments.
This fixed a variety of the country's issues but made the people unhappy. After protests and unsuccessful suppression, the government was overthrown in favour of a people's republic run by an elected forum.
Sin Oro continued to create its own cultural identity, and through the years became relatively stable. Its involvement with international trade grew thanks to an abundance of precious and semiprecious metal deposits in Sin Oro. By all means, Sin Oro was doing well for itself.
Harpsbilge set its eyes on Sin Oro's resources during its second colonial push. In 905 HB, Harpsbilge sent insurgents to destabilize Sin Oro. They then swept into the country in the name of "stabilizing" it. Though the national army put up a good fight, they stood no chance against Harpsbilge. A military dictatorship in service of Harpsbilge was put in power, and those involved with the old regime were exiled or executed.
Sin Oro, its pride and identity shattered, is now in sharp decline. What fortune Sin Oro had now belongs to Harpsbilge, yet no aid is being provided to the citizens who are now struggling to survive.

Governance

Sin Oro is run by a literally draconian government. Hakkramaul the Saviour (self-given title) is a green dragonborn and the despotic leader of the country. Everybody answers to his will, and he ensures it with a small army's worth of secret police (the senior officers of which are all also dragonborns). There is no pretense of democracy in the governance; the building in which the people's forum was once held has been converted into the private residence of Hakkramaul.
Hakkramaul has set up governors in smaller cities who answer directly to him. One or two of these governors are executed a year just to ensure the rest stay fiercely loyal.

Inhabitants

Sin Oro is a very mixed nation. Roughly 35% of the population is human, many of whom have mildly tanned skin, brown to dark blonde hair, brown eyes, and a tendency towards being slightly shorter than the human average. There are, however, several groups of humans who do not fall under this description.
Another 20% of the nation is dragonborn. The split between chromatic and metallic is mostly even, with the most represented group being the silver dragonborns.
Tabaxis make up an additional 15% of the population. These tabaxis generally have a variety of fur colours and patterns, but the most common group is those with monochromatic bright orange fur.
An unknown number of aaracokra and goliaths inhabit the mountainous regions of the country and are generally left alone by the rest of the populous.
The remainder of the people are of a wide variety of races. If a race exists, it's likely that Sin Oro has some inhabitants.

Culture

Sin Oran culture is based upon the ideal of freedom and the voice of the people. Before the new regime, it was common practice for people to band together petitioning for some kind of change, not only to enact said change but as a community event. Freedom of expression is another key value, so it was common practice for Sin Orans to stage "shell breaking" rituals as a coming of age ceremony, in which an individual was forced to do something that they felt uncomfortable with in front of a crowd in order to overcome their anxieties.
Sin Oro also has an excellent cooking culture. Their cuisine is equivalent to a combination of the real-world Spanish and Italian cuisine.
