Bodari

"I tell you, I don't trust them. There's magic in their blood. I trust my gun more than I'd ever trust magic, but those creepy bastards refuse to even touch them. They're up to something, I just know it."
-Garth Barchet, Sailor

Intro

The Bodari are a race of intelligent humanoids best known for their nature magics and shamanistic practices. They are most often found in the Six Seas of Wonder, forming tribes. Bodari are often isolated from the world, and outside of the Six Seas, their existence is not widely discussed.

Appearence & Physicality

Bodari are mostly smooth-skinned humanoids who lack hair. They generally stand no taller than 5'8", with an average person being about 5'4". This height is partially because of a strangely jointed back, which naturally curves forward. Bodari have skin colours ranging from sand beige to a light faded aquamarine to light earthen greens. their heads are slightly smaller than humans', tapering off in an overly long chin. Thick weblike veins are visible beneath their skin over their body (save for around their head).
Bodari, despite spending much of their time in nature, do not have a tendency towards physical strength or dexterity; they more rely on wisdom and intellect to survive. An overweight Bodari is almost unheard of, not only because they don't typically have access to indulgent diets, but simply because their bodies are able to store energy more densely, and thus avoid that. An overweight Bodari eats at least twice as much as an overweight human. This is not widely known by those other than Bodari.

Culture

Bodari place significant value on their independence from other cultures. For most of history, they have felt threatened by others - first the elves of Timberwelsh, then the human Harps, and now simply everybody. Everybody seems to want Bodari territory, so they form increasingly isolated and reactionary communities. Bodari communities are typically led by head shamans - those who hold the most power over natural magics. These are also usually the oldest members of the communities, and Bodari have great respect for the elderly (which is why the First Great Curse of the Six Seas is seen as a massive middle finger to the elves. "No elders for you").
In line with the self-sufficient values, many Bodari reject modern technology. Anything beyond swords and mess kits is seen as excessive by many communities. In fact, many communities are nudists (which has only perpetuated the stereotype that Bodari are savages instead of simply those who willfully abstain from modern life).
The Bodari that interact with the outside world are a curious and easily amazed sort. Many have described talking with them like talking with an adult child - inquisitive and naive towards the practices of those outside. This is less true for the Bodari belonging to the few trading settlements about The Wild Sea, who are more accustomed to the outside world. These Bodari share more cultural elements with other humanoid races than they do with other Bodari, though they still value the importance of nature as much as any other - they acknowledge it and move on with their modern lives.

Stats

Ability Score Increase
Your Wisdom score increases by 2, and your Intelligence increases by 1.
Age
Bodarimature slightly slower than humans, typically reaching maturity at age 30-35. They can live upwards of 140 years, with shamans and others who use nature magic having a notably longer natural lifespan, in extreme cases reaching 300.
Size
Bodari are slightly smaller than humans, rarely reaching a height above 5'8". Your size is medium.
Speed
Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Shaman Blood
Bodari have a long history of practicing shamanistic magic, and their origins are intimately linked with druidcraft. You are able to draw some of the latent magic within you in limited quantities. You learn the druidcraft cantrip and one first-level spell from either the druid or ranger spell list, which you can cast once per long rest. If you are a druid or ranger, you may now choose spells from the spell list of the other class when you are choosing spells.
Nature's Bounty
Each Bodari is born with an affinity for a certain aspect of nature. Some make excellent scouts, others sailors, others forgers. When you create your character, choose one:
Superior Foraging You are a master forager, and nature seems to offer you extra resources with no effort on your part. When foraging, you can either reduce the DC to forage by 5, or you can gather extra food or resources for two additional people. You choose when you start foraging.
Nature's Navigator You have an internal compass that rarely fails. You always have a general idea of where you are if you have any familiarity with the region you're in (even if you've only seen a map). Your checks to avoid being lost or to find paths have their DC reduced by 5.
Animal Scouting You are in tune with the movements of small creatures around you and you know when something's amiss. In natural environments (not in dungeons/cities/etc.), you gain a +5 on perception checks and don't gain disadvantage for being in dim light or darkness. This feature also does not work in regions with no animals (the sea is fine because it has fish).
Limited Magic Reistance
As a reaction to being hit with a spell attack or subjected to a spell saving throw, you can draw forth a portion of the magical energy running within your blood and grant yourself extra protection against the spell.
In the case of a spell attack, you may reduce the damage by xd8, where x is half your level rounded up.
In the case of a spell save, you may give yourself advantage on the saving throw.
You can use this feature two times a long rest, increasing to three at 11th level.
Languages
You can speak, read, and write Common, Bodari, and Druidic
