Moths of Arotora

Overview

The continent of Arotora is home to many species of moths. Often overlooked in favor of their more ostentatious butterfly cousins, these enigmatic beings harbor unique powers, mesmerizing appearances, and rich mythologies that weave them into the fabric of the world. From luminous guides of the night to spectral harbingers of change their presence often shrouded in wonder and intrigue.

Obscura Alchemilla

A smoky gray moth with wing patterns resembling runes or alchemical symbols. Has the ability to produce alchemical dust that can either enhance potions or disrupt spells. When threatened, it releases a thick, protective fog. Its habitat includes but is not limited to: bogs, secluded glades and certain magical libraries. Believed to be witch's familiars and they often help with spellcasting and potion making.

Zephyrlume Spindlera

A moth with thin, translucent wings that ripple like gossamer in the wind. Has the ability to control gentle breezes carrying spores and pollen great distances. Its silk is used for crafting cloaks that many use for invisibility. It can often be found in open plains and on cliffsides where winds are high. Zephyrlume Spindlera are often thought to be protectors of the flora.

Aureothrix Radiata

A large golden moth with wings that seem to radiate sunlight. Aureothrix Radiata absorbs sunlight during the day and glows brightly at night, providing warmth and healing energy. Its scales can be used to craft potions of light. Their habitat often includes high altitude sunny places. Due to them glowing in the dark, they are often mistaken for faeries.


 

Mortifera Umbra

A skeletal, ashen moth with tattered wings that appear to drip shadows. Has the ability to drain the life force of plants and small creatures to sustain itself. Its powder can cause bad luck or minor curses. These moths can often be found in graveyards and cursed lands. To ordinary folk, they are considered an omen of death but to many who worship Ra'rena, they are considered sacred.


 

Aetheralis Mirabilis

A moth with a shimmering spectrum of colors rippling across its wings. Creates illusions to protect itself. Its powder can amplify magical abilities for a short time. It often inhabits floating islands or areas filled with wild magic. Aetheralis Mirabilis is a symbol of joy and wonder in most of Arotora.


 

Umbrafelis Tenebris

A moth with black, velvety wings with eyespots that seem to blink and shift as it flies. When flying, it makes no sound, and it feeds on negative emotions, leaving peace in its wake. Umbrafelis Tenebris is often found in unhallowed ground and in the Whispering Woods. Some see it as a guardian of these places, others think it is a bad omen.


Cryophora Glacialis

A moth with white frosted wings with a blue-ish hue resembling frosted leaves. Has the ability to frost over anything it touches and is described in stories as being a source for frozenbyte. Often found in the north near the Fence at the Frozen Fen and htought to be a case of mutation.

Nebulothys Ecliptica

A moth as dark as the night sky, with constellations glimmering on its wings. It weaves "star silk," a luminous, unbreakable thread used by mages for crafting celestial armor or capturing starlight for potions and charms. Only found at night by coastal forests. These moths are thought to be celestial in nature and not of this world.


Ignifera Aurorae

A fiery-red and gold moth with wings that flicker like flames. When threatened, it bursts into harmless flames, reappearing moments later in a different location. Its presence rejuvenates dying plants, leaving trails of blooming flowers. Often found in desert and volcanic areas. Ignifera Aurorae moths are believed to herald renewal and are associated with cycles of rebirth.

Luminara Noctis

A large, ethereal moth with wings that shimmer like moonlight, changing from silver to pale blue. Emits a soft glow that calms nearby creatures and dispels fear. The moth's powder can induce dreams filled with revelations or guide lost souls. Found in dark regions of the Whistling Mountains. Stories say they are spirits of fallen dreamers, returning to inspire creativity in the world.

Solivagus Lumina

A glowing moth with lantern-like bulbs on their wings. Guides lost travelers through dense forests or labyrinths, but only those with pure intentions. Its light repels dark magic and creatures. Often found in Haunted woods. Thought to be the spirits of kind souls, they serve as protectors of the vulnerable and seekers of justice.


Velvorum Sanguis

A dark red moth with intricate lace-like wings, resembling flowing silk. Its wings secrete a powder that enhances blood-based magic or healing rituals. It can also sense life forces from great distances. Often found near the Coronation Pit. Revered by healers and feared by warriors, they are often seen as omens of sacrifice or powerful magic.


Arachthys Tenebrae

A black-and-white striped moth with wing edges resembling spiderwebs. Produces a soft silk that is a common substitute for spider silk in Arotora. Often found in the caves of the Whistling Mountains. Said to be the offspring of Nexara, they supposedly guard hidden treasures in the caves.


Somniphora Umbra

A pale lavender moth with patterns resembling closed eyes on its wings. Can enter the dreams of sleeping beings, weaving either nightmares or visions of the future. Its powder induces sleep when scattered. Found in hidden groves where the veil between waking and dreaming is thin. Somniphora Umbra are both feared and revered for their power to shape the subconscious.

Petraflora Calcarea

A moth of large porprtions with wings that resemble delicate, fossilized flowers, with earthy tones of tan and green. Turns stone to soil and can revive dead earth, encouraging plant growth even in barren landscapes. Found in desolate ruins, rocky landscapes and deserts. Believed to be the remnants of ancient forest spirits, they are worshipped by druids and gardeners seeking to restore life to wastelands.
