Dawnrest
Geography
Located in the Whistling Mountains, and bordering on the Whispering Woodland. Dawnrest sits mostly on a plateau at about 2,400ft above sea level. This city started as a small mining community that quickly grew into the city you see today. Dawnrest is sustained by the ferry crystal mines, Forestry and Milling. Many come to Dawnrest for its stunning views that surround the city in its entirety.Economy
Dawnrest is the largest distributer of cherry spruce, which is used to make various cabinets and furniture. The city's main export are ferry crystals which are used for funeral rites to ferry the soul across the Void. Many of the god fearing seek out these ferry crystals. The mine also produces other crystals as well, but at a lower rate than the ferry crystals.Government
The city is run by a small, appointed council of seven members known as the Augury. Many of the members are nominated based on a variety of qualifications found in the Augury Code. These member nominations happen every 7 years and are staggered so that there are no harsh transitions in members. Recently, there were two members appointed at the same time. This event occured because one of the members tragically passed away at the pinnacle of nomination.Arts and Culture
There are many attractions in Dawnrest and many artists and artisans find solace in this city. The city itself is surrounded by mountains with many beautiful painting spots for those who paint with the rare pigments found strewn about the world. There are many live theatres and music halls in Dawnrest. Among the many artisans, cabinet and furniture makers rely on the forestry industry in Dawnrest to create their masterpieces.Notable Buildings
Garden of Ra'rena's Whispers
A gargatuan greenhouse-cathedral that is the main place of worship for Ra'rena, The Goddess of Nature and Death. This massive greenhouse is kept by Ra'rena's devout followers, the Silence. They say that the Silence members take a vow of silence at the beginning of their service to Ra'rena because the unspeakable horrors they see during their initiation. Spooky stuff.
A good overview, giving us strong imagery in the minds eye of Dawnrest. I enjoy the transitionary aspect of what was once a small mining town into something larger and likely a bit more sustainable, and the diversifying of the regions economy is definitely an important and well mentioned aspect, helping us understand that transition, as mining communities are usually very boom-bust like. The Augury and The Augury Code are interesting in their structure and implied importance, and they lend themselves naturally to wishing to know whom those people and what that code actually is, so that's definitely a nice little invitational hook to explore further, as are the ferry crystals mentioned. I would love to learn more about those as well, both from the idea of their spiritual/religious significance, as well as their actual supernatural/magickal attributes and effects if any. Overall, like this very much :)
