Feywild

The Feywild is one of the inner planes, a mirror of The Material Plane, where everything is enhanced. The mountains are taller, the trees more alive, the rivers flow faster, every laughter is heartier and every heartbrake felt threefold. As with all the inner planes, it is not defined by good or evil, but by the special aspects of the plane, and the creatures that inhabit it, both of which tend to be more chaotic than not. Unfortunately for the reputation of the plane, it is inhabited by the Fey, creatures famed for their chaotic nature and unpredictability.

Seelie / Unseelie

It is a common missconception among mortals that the Feywild and its inhabitants are split between the Seelie and the Unseelie courts, which are in a continual state of war. In fact, they are not courts at all, they are just two different forms, that every Fey has. As the Light slowly moves, half of the feywild is showered in daylight, and the other half is engulfed in darkness.

As different places shift from one phase to the other, all Fey that occupy them feel the slowly rising urge to shift forms, which also affects their dispositions. For example, a beautifull dryad that helped a traveller find his way may have been turned into a spindly old hag that wants to trick him into serving her eternally. Most fey revel in this ability to shift and enjoy all sides of the emotional spectrum, though some get obsessed with maintaining one or another aspect, which is frowned upon in Fey culture. These aspects are the same for the flora and fauna of the Feywild, and a tall grass teeming with rabbits may become a bog that hides hungry wolves and foxes

Living Geography

The land and plants of the Feywild seem to be alive, with a low level of intelligence, and the ability to control themselves and aid or impede those that inhabit them. They have a similarly chaotic and unpredictable nature as the Fey, but less agency, being rocks, trees and grasses. The King and Queen also have some control over the flora and fauna of their domain, though how they manage their relationship with them depends on the individual. Some may choose to ignore the extremely needy grass, only for it to provide shelter to a rival.

It is not uncommon for someone to reason with the local flora and fauna to ask for directions, shelter, or even food. For example, a large patch of tall grass may be neutral to a traveller, but if insulted will grasp them and slow their travel through it, only relenting if the offending person has appologised. This effect can escalate to terrifying effects if someone somehow manages to aggravate a mountain or large river enaugh for them to act.

Kings and Queens of the Fey

The lands of the Feywild are ruled over by a large number of Kings and Queens, who rule over geographic locations like mountains, forests, rivers and grass fields, the locations of which match the Material Plane , though excaggerated. The position of King and Queen is earned by one's personal might and cunning, which are in turn usually determined by a Fey's age. However, as Fey are chaotic creatures, they rarely respect authority, so a King or Queen usually has little control over their subjects, which is as they like it, preferring to indulge in their wiles than manage a domain.

Though conflict and politics between nearby Kings and Queens are very common, battles to the death are usually avoided in favor of more subversive means. Besides the ability to indulge themselves, Kings and Queens also gain some control over the land they rule, though it always maintains some agency of its own.

Fey Life-cycle

Fey are magically birthed in the Feywild with seemingly no rhyme or reason, though it is assumed by many schollars that they reflect strong emotions felt in the material plane. As a Fey ages they feel more emotions, and grow their experiences, which allows them to grow their power, and with more power comes the ability to prank, help, torture or love other Fey.

If a Fey has not been killed by their or other's escapades, it will eventually come to a level of power that challenges the local ruler, at which point the Fey have two choises. They can challenge the local ruler, or find a place with a stronger ruler that is not challenged by their presence. This however is unlikely, as most rulers appreciate the power over the land given to them, and the freedom to do whatever they want, and will ensure that any upstart looking to challenge them is dealt with.
