The Three Princes

"When the song is silenced, the Three Princes will rise again." - Cynog the Prophet
"Once impurity is born, a fall shall cause the rise of a new god." - Unknown prophet
The Three Princes were a trio of powerful demonic gods that terrorized the world prior to 2390 EC, when they were sealed away by a great hero. They were said to be behind many great tragedies of the world, including the disasters that drove the dwarves from the underground.   Their names were The Dread, The Spite, and The Sorrow.

Historical Basis

The Three Princes are widely believed to be real entities, and evidence of the havoc they wrought by simply reading the history of the dwarvish people. Stories from distant countries across the sea purport that their machinations reached far, and dwarves across the world are still coping with the creatures from the underdark.   Their defeat was prophesied, as was a warning of their return. Prophecies, fickle as they are, expounded little on what would bring back their return, save for one obscure passage by Cynog the Prophet in 3613 EC, which states, "When the song is silenced, the Three Princes will rise again."   Nearly fifty years after, Priests of the Church of Etione linked this passage to another made in 3313 EC. "Once impurity is born, a fall shall cause the rise of a new god."

Spread

Few of the modern age know of the Three Princes, whose tales are dark and old and not much for modern retellings. With no methods given on how to prevent these events from coming to be, and fear of bringing it about, the knowledge was spread between dusty tomes tucked into the back of libraries, and footnotes obliquely mentioning the original prophecies.
