Poeli

<Pow-lee>

(a.k.a. The Storytelling Spirit)

Name

The name Poeli was given to the god long ago rather than one he provided, and means 'child' in an ancient language. This stems from several stories of travelers meeting Poeli. Whenever asked their name, Poeli would change the subject. At the same time, if someone began to call them something, he would correct them and say "That's not my name."   Mortals began simply calling the god 'child' due to its diminutive appearance. More confusingly, the god seems to be able to innately tell who is using 'Poeli' as a name, and who is using 'poeli' to mean child.

Storytelling Spirit

Poeli is also sometimes known as the Storytelling Spirit. Over many years, mortals began to realize that stories about Poeli were oddly easy to recount - not simply that he arrived at exciting times, or had a grand plan he was enacting - but that Poeli seems to appear to those who will have interesting lives.   The lives of the mortals Poeli appears to fit into easy relatable story structures, and can often be neatly sorted into acts. Important people come and go as necessary, and drama seems to naturally build.   Mortals more familiar with the god are often wary of him - not all of Poeli's stories end well for the protagonist, and in the best case they are sure to have trying times ahead of them. Those around them fear for their safety as bit players in another person's story, but often find themselves cursed by a slew of strong reasons to remain.

Divine Domains

Poeli is associated with bardic tales, stories, tragedy, and fate. He is a wandering god that has been seen across the world.   Poeli's divine symbol is his mask, crying silvery tears.

Tenets of Faith

Poeli's faith mostly consists of bards, storytellers, actors, and wanderers. His worship is fairly equally spread between major trade cities and small isolated villages. His faith is notably absent from the fey of the Great Forest and the Dragonsbreath Isles where land travel is uncommon.   Poeli has been made aware of those worshipping him, but maintains a fairly detached relationship with them. He has given no instructions, and the faith constructed their own tenets. Most revolve around how to write and tell stories.   It is popular for worshippers to wear masks resembling Poeli's when performing, especially if taking on a narrator role.

Physical Description

Identifying Characteristics

Poeli appears as a short humanoid not terribly unlike the Halflings, though his ears are much larger, and his hair is a shimmering white. Poeli is never seen without a black, polished wooden mask. One of his eyes is a bright, fiery orange, while the other is a pitch black color. Poeli is frequently depicted with silvery tears welling in the eyes of his mask.
