Demon Hierarchy Rank/Title in Nailara | World Anvil

Demon Hierarchy

The demonic armies that fill the Abyss can often seem like mindless hordes of bloodthirsty monsters, but in many cases this is only partially-true. As creatures crafted with specific intent rather than born, there is a distinct hierarchy among demons.   This hierarchy determines their rank in these demonic armies, rather than formal titles such as "general" or "captain". These ranks are known as the 13 Seals, with demons sometimes introducing themselves with their name appended with "of the 7th Seal" or similar. Demons tend to have their forms altered as they rise through the ranks of the hierarchy.

Demon Nobility

There are a variety of unique and powerful demons and gods that reside in the Abyss, and act as a rank above any other seal. They tend to rule vast swathes of planes, or control key strongholds. At such heights of power, they may even act of their own accord rather than follow a demonic prime - though only the most clever and strong tend to stay alive for long on their own.   Demonic nobility tend to take titles most easily translated to mortal words like 'king', 'queen', or 'prince'.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

When a demon fails its superiors, it may be demoted to a lower seal. Repeated demotion can result in their very form being stripped from them, and turned into that of a demon from a lower seal.     Even further below those without a seal are those who had their seal entirely stripped from them, the nupperibo. These sad, vile creatures exist in constant agony and fear, and are generally killed by some other sort of demon soon after they are demoted, to feast on their soul and become stronger themselves.   Those that aren't immediately killed tend to cower in the corners of the Abyss, in constant fear that they will be found. Most retain a level of intelligence above some of their near-mindless superiors, if only so they can better understand their position in this hierarchy.
