Personal history

Born alongside her 2-minute younger twin brother Strigen, Johanna was the middle child of the von Silber noble family, the Vevods of the Southern Mrazily Mountains in the Kingdom of Maribor. Growing up without the expectation of a major inheritance, her youth was mostly carefree, giving her ample opportunity to pursue her own interests, as well as play games with her brothers. While she enjoyed the pranks her twin Strigen would rope her into, she was always amazed at the way her older brother Johan carried himself with both confidence and compassion for those around him. To Johanna, her older brother was everything she believed a noble was meant to be. Although her childhood bond with her parents was strong, with her mother Ingrid pushing her to follow her dreams in music, Johanna always wished her father Jurgen had more time for the family between his duties to duchy and realm.   At the age of 60, very young by elven standards, the wholesome family dynamic Johanna had been accustomed to was broken by the mysterious disappearance of her older brother Johan. Rumors and conspiracies abounded between courtiers as to the nature of what happened, but none seemed to lead to any actual evidence, and attempts at arcane communication proved useless. Johanna's parents were tight-lipped about the affair, seemingly indifferent to the point of denial. Acting as if Johan had never truly been there, they forced Johanna to begin an arduous study of noble responsibilities and courtly etiquette as the new heiress of Vilbergen. This radical departure from her easy-going childhood took a long time to adjust, and Johanna grew afraid of every mistake she made. Amidst the constant embarrassments, Johanna felt like she had to become the perfect child to fill the shoes Johan had left behind, and her father's heavy expectations further strained their relationship. Between lessons and shadowing her father in court, she did find some solace in her mother, who continued to support her passion for music. If she must become a ruling noble, then she could at least compose her own works of music in her own time. For the next two decades, Johanna's life became a never-ending series of social events and keeping up appearances until one day her father was too ill to travel to the capital for a council on the kingdom's finances. Johanna went in his stead with Strigen by her side for emotional support, and having acquitted themselves well before the most powerful lords of Maribor, they earned some measure of trust from their father. Leveraging their success at the council, the twins pushed their parents for the opportunity to seek out Johan on their own. Jurgen and Ingrid, despite their apprehensions, could not find it in themselves to refuse.   Setting out into the wider world for the first time, the twins made their way towards the metropolis of Perlingen. Over-excited and without understanding the scope of what their search for Johan might entail, they promptly blew through most of their finances in the resort towns between their home of Vilbergen and their destination. Unfortunately for the duo, the contacts their money had bought proved useless, and their spending had drawn the attention of dangerous onlookers. Upon reaching the inn they had booked in Perlingen, Strigen was found missing the next morning, with signs of struggle that looked like a mixture of elemental magic and claw marks. Johanna's distress and the ensuing investigation brought the attention of several travelers the twins had bumped into on the road over the previous days. Little did any of them realize at the time, but this newfound coalition would face many harrowing ordeals together in the months to come. With many animals and misfits in the group, and although they would bicker about names from time to time, Johanna thought of them fondly as the 'Menagerie'. Their combined efforts quickly yielded results that the von Silber fortunes never could, and Johanna learned that the group who had abducted her brothers was known as the Order of Renewed Souls.   Paranoid of being discovered and abducted herself, Johanna spent the next few months disguised wherever she went. Their leads on the cult led them to a hat shop in city of Sternburg, whose owner turned violent at the Menagerie's snooping. Wielding implants that channeled elemental magic through her body, the shop owner killed one of Johanna's allies, Teu, before being apprehended. This brush with death showed Johanna the true severity of her quest, and the twisted resolve of the cult she was up against. It also revealed the identity of the man responsible for her missing brothers, a noble and opera singer by the name of Leopold von Zringen. Tracking down the estate of von Zringen, the Menagerie made the acquaintance of a traveling priest of Threspa named Serafina, who was disturbed by the hauntings at the nearby village. Together they would fend off a horde of zombies and an ambush of shadows on the route to von Zringen's hilltop manor. Inside Johanna witnessed many monsters and cursed spirits, many with signs of horrific medical and magical experiments, and even a member of the Order of Renewed Souls that had been rendered into a psychically-charged brain in a jar. Against all of this depravity, relief washed over Johanna when she found Strigen alive, locked in the basement experiment room behind a false wall. Their reunion was bittersweet, however, as his time being locked away and tested upon by the cult had bled away Strigen's youthful panache. As much as she wanted to take her brother home at that instant, Johanna knew as long as the Order of Renewed Souls was active, her family and the innocent people of Rilumir would live in fear. She arranged for Strigen to be escorted home, and steeled herself to track down Johan and the elusive Leopold von Zringen.   Notes and teleportation circle runes in von Zringen's lab pointed to Renewed Souls operations in the Derinyol, the great chasm in central Rilumir whose opening centuries before had unleashed a tide of elemental horrors, though it had been fairly dormant since then. Filled with both fear and excitement, Johanna knew great danger was ahead, but was also fascinated at what they might find in its mostly unknown depths. Upon arrival, they quickly captured a member of the Renewed Souls leading a group of hired laborers at a dig site along the mouth of the Derinyol. While most of the group were debating what to do with the prisoner, others took it upon themselves to throw the cultist into the abyss below, sparking an argument over how to handle the lives of others in the future. Despite the horrors the cult had inflicted on her family, Johanna was staunchly opposed to killing those who were willing to surrender themselves. Once inside the Derinyol, Johanna was overwhelmed at the beautiful crystal caverns, to the point that resonant energies gave her visions of a draconic ancestor nearby. After a harrowing chase by an Age of Stone construct, the Menagerie came upon a city of kobolds guarding a colossal slumbering crystal dragon, Silixis. The kobolds, led by a mechanically-augmented elder named Mar-Kythira, told the group of the dragon's imprisonment by envious gods, and that Johan had gained the dragon's boon before setting off to face their jailor, a sphinx named Dagishilti. In her naivete, Johanna was all too eager to follow in her brother's footsteps, and with the agreement of the group they promised to help free Silixis by finding draconic artifacts that had been lost to history scattered across Rilumir. Silixis reached out to the Menagerie telepathically and bestowed upon them a measure of power, after which Johanna has steadily grown crystalline scales over her silver ones.   With the promise of righting a great injustice and that her brother was in safe hands, Johanna and the Menagerie left the Derinyol to travel across Korumshar towards their first goal: Peacemaker, Halberd of the First Khagan. Along the way they were beset by assassins working with Leopold von Zringen, who planned to get Johanna and her friends killed in an arena. When his plan was foiled, von Zringen tried to frame the party as the ones responsible for the deaths in the crowd that followed, but was forced to flee from his own spectacle as Johanna used her talking skills to effectively direct the crowd to safety. At this point, Johanna's fear of the man turned to pure hatred, seeing him in person at last resorting to such underhanded methods revealed him for the lowly despicable cretin that he was, not the pompous superior noble he espoused to be. The Menagerie chose to lay low for a month after this, during which Johanna relaxed by teaching music classes in Iskandar, and starting work on a new waltz. While spending time living among the Esgili, it became quickly apparent to Johanna how the Khazmag Khaganate's rule repressed the people as she passed by once mighty temples turned into offices of colonial bureaucracy. Seeing the people forced to cast off their heritage shocked her, and her sympathy for the Esgili and their banned faith helped catalyze her own faith in Threspa.   Refreshed and ready to move on with their plans, the Menagerie traveled across eastern Korumshar into the sandy wastes of the Kibrati Desert in search of the tomb the First Khagan had perished finding. Shadowy spirits lingered at the edge of their visions, and once past the arcane locks and traps they were beset by the mummified warriors of Shar-Lenadurri, an ancient Esgili king. Upon facing a massive, animate, well-chiseled statue whose voice boomed like thunder and called for the party to offer supplication to the king or face their demise, Johanna quickly convinced her friends to try diplomacy after a quick study of the tomb's murals. Accepting the Menagerie's offerings, the statue, which they had dubbed "Gigachad," led them through the rest of the tomb and safely through its hazards, to the final burial chamber where the mummified court of the king summoned his spirit from the heavens back into his body. Seeing the extent of what they would have had to fight, the party nervously thanked Johanna for her foresight. Shar-Lenadurri told the Menagerie of the ancient war between the gods and Silixis, and how the dragon and their followers fought to subjugate Rilumir for their own ends, offering the party the chance to take Peacemaker but only if they vowed to use it to destroy the dragon instead. The revelation that she had been so easily tricked by Silixis gave Johanna pause, and in her self-reflection she felt like a snowflake tossed about by the wind. The mummy king gave the party Peacemaker and bid them continue their quest, with the knowledge that divine plans were now in motion to destroy Silixis once and for all.   From here the Menagerie set out once more to find the draconic artifacts, though they were shaken by what they had learned. With the party electing to travel by boat to their next destination, Ordaksgard, Johanna would have to face two of her greatest fears: the open ocean, and giants. Luckily for her they had the aid of Mash-Bani, an Esgili Leonin merchant captain, whose willingness to help their quest solely on the grounds of her faith was inspiring to Johanna. Anxiety over the creaking of the ship and tossing of waves led Johanna to seek the captain's reassurances, and in that confidence Johanna found a friend and, with time and a few days of relaxation on shore to calm her nerves, romance. The search for the artifact musket Starshatter led Johanna to the acquaintance of two venerable dragons, one under the guise of a druid named Thorold, and the other his mother, Mirruthaniss, who was now a spirit guarding over the burial hoard of the giant who last used the weapon. Mirruthaniss challenged the Menagerie to fight for their right to wield Starshatter, and in narrowly overcoming the spectral dragon Johanna was proud of herself and her friends for how far they had come together. In exchange for helping his mother find rest after a long watch over the giant's hoard, Thorold awakened several of the Menagerie's animal companions, including the dire mongoose brothers Ralph and Felix whom Johanna had been raising, and now with speech saw her like a mother.   Making use of von Zringen's teleportation circle network, the party returned to Perlingen while Mash-Bani sailed around Rilumir to meet them in Daisong in six weeks' time to help search for the final draconic artifact, the Cloudsliver Augur. The two would keep in touch via Sending Stones and eagerly await the day they would meet again, but in the meantime the Menagerie had a new goal. Their time in the Varldreif had shown the Varlings to be eager allies against Silixis, but the Archbishop of Torredo was in the midst of a crusade against the giants that they couldn't ignore. Stopping the Archbishop would both stop senseless bloodshed and free veteran warriors for the fight against the dragon's followers, which Sendings from friends of the party had revealed to be growing to attack those who dwelled upon the surface. After getting into a fight with a recruiter for Silixis in Perlingen, the party were bailed out of the fight by a guard who had been watching them from afar, later revealing himself to be an ancient black dragon who used the name Andreas while in humanoid form. With Andreas they would meet Kaluhiwa, another ancient dragon who was known to the Zamlisch as a giver of small gifts. The two dragons had seen the Menagerie's efforts across Rilumir and wanted to guarantee they were on the same side in the fight against Silixis, offering their understanding of the primordial dragon and aid as mentors. Having steady contact with two ancient dragons gave Johanna hope for growing her own draconic powers safely, as well as reassurance that even those once close to Silixis could see reason and align against them. A sparring match with Kaluhiwa helped him reawaken some of his long-dormant strength, which besides being a useful tool in fighting the crystal dragon, was also awe-inspiring for Johanna to behold.   Following a few days of rest with their new dragon friends, the Menagerie made their way through the countryside towards Torredo. Along their path they brought along an old friend from Sternburg, Lord Henrich Teyber, who taught them that political intrigue could be used for good intentions. With his help they gathered a small crowd from the villages on the way to the Archbishop's seat of power, and linked up with Serafina once more to stage a protest to open the eyes of the people to the sins of the Archbishop. Their combined efforts proved successful, Johanna and her friends delivered rousing speeches to the masses on the street that seemed to be turning the people to their side. But when the demonstration was attacked by a group of Illithid Mind Flayers, Johanna's pride at sharing her message mixed with shame at the danger her actions had thrown innocents into. Shortly after the Menagerie dealt with the Illithid threat, the Archbishop's right hand, Arturo Peralt, arrived and threatened to arrest them for the public disturbance, casting Prismatic Spray on the group as they fled through Johanna's teleportation circle. As they emerged safe in Maribor, they realized one of their number, Taihar, had taken a prismatic ray meant for Adrex, and was now nowhere to be seen. Over the next day, though, Taihar was able to Sending to the group that he was sent to an outer plane, the Glimmering Mists, the Heaven of the god Zecatesh, and needed their help to return to Myzelis. Coming together as a group to pass the three tests of Zecatesh, Johanna succeeded at the Test of Growth by reflecting on her own perfectionism, with the realization that even the best-laid plans can be foiled, mistakes might be made, but as long as you choose to learn from them rather than ignore them, they need not weigh you down. Although she had seen the workings of temples from the outside since childhood, by forgiving herself for the loss of Strigen and now Taihar, Johanna finally felt the enlightenment faith could provide for the first time in her life. Now in familiar territory, Johanna took the opportunity to return to the family estate in Vilbergen while the Menagerie handled some private business in Rodezon. Several days with the creature comforts she had sorely lacked for months now nearly tempted her to stay, but she knew in her heart she wouldn't allow her journey to end here. She also noted that despite making it back home, Strigen was absent during her stay as he had decided to go as a diplomat to the Acharoi's summons in Rodezon. Johanna's idyllic vacation was cut short when visions of the Nightmare of the Ley struck the world, and she realized her friends and brother were in grave peril.   Johanna bid a hasty farewell to her parents and arranged to be teleported to Rodezon as quickly as possible, although by the time she arrived the threat was greatly diminished. Her friends, now considered saviors of the city for fending off the dread kraken known as the Melusinae, had also received information from the Acharoi's intelligence agent, Guilloux, that Leopold von Zringen was known to be seeking an enigmatic ruin called the Anchor of Severance deep in the Obstrom Rainforest. They wasted no time in traveling to Maribor to arrange an airship to take them to the Anchor, although they were forced to trek through the jungle for several days as its exact location was unknown. Once inside the ancient ruin they came face to face with von Zringen many times, as he had divided himself into different points in time to saturate himself in leyline energy. What von Zringen hoped would be a chance to grow stronger instead gave Johanna the chance to take her revenge on him three times over. After fending off a group of Illithids who also had interest in the ruin, the Menagerie were confronted by a Solar of Sinodar named Zethenu, who offered them a pact to erase the Anchor of Severance and its arcane forge from the memories of aethrin so that its power could not be abused in exchange for a boon from Sinodar. Though the Menagerie agreed to the pact, Johanna turned down the boon, as she wished to devote her faith to Threspa. Zethenu then revealed that although the pact was sealed, they were still sworn to prevent any mortals from leaving the Anchor of Severance, and a tense combat followed in which Johanna was able to tap into the time-bending energies of the Anchor to keep her friends alive. Surviving their encounters in the Anchor of Severance but with their memories of the ruin itself indistinct, the Menagerie teleported back to Maribor to restock before going to Daisong for their original plan to meet with Mash-Bani to sail for the Cloudsliver Augur.   While in Maribor, the party spent a few days relaxing and carousing, during which Johanna chose to disguise herself to do simple work at the local Temple of Threspa so that she could feel more grounded in the everyday traditions of her faith. Her father's arrival in the city for a royal summons gave her mixed feelings, as she was happy to see him but also unsure how his professional concerns might clash with her adventuring lifestyle and friends. When introducing her friends to her father during their stay at the family's manor in the city, Johanna was taken aback at how fondly Jurgen spoke about her and her future. He made it clear that while his time in the city would be busy, he wanted Johanna to know he was proud of her, and brought a magical storytelling music box from her mother to remember the family by. The Menagerie was also offered the honor of imprinting their wills into the first royal Yurtesh of the Kingdom of Maribor, where they became friends with Crown Prince Sebastian through their shared interests over a long day of casting into the construct. Glad to be accepted by her family while also feeling like she was stepping out of her father's shadow to leave her own mark on politics, Johanna was ready to head to Daisong. Teleporting to the distant city with her friends, she spent the first few days preparing for her girlfriend's arrival checking out the best shops and restaurants. News from Korumshar that the Derinyol had fissured to an even larger size and was now draining rivers and lakes spurred the Menagerie to keep their time in Daisong short, and trouble with Bodytaker Plants on Mash-Bani's ship kept her busy through the evening they otherwise would have spent together. Nonetheless, their reunion was happy and they shared gifts with each other they had found in their travels apart.   The Menagerie embarked on a several weeks-long journey through the Makani Isles aboard Mash-Bani's ship, Horizon's Dream, where Johanna was forced to face her severe thalassophobia. Terrified of the numerous encounters with creatures of the ocean abyss, Johanna persevered by confiding in Mash-Bani and helping her manage her ship. With the assistance of an old Mistcall penpal, Stefan Zalken, Johanna made contact with the Wehilani Tribe of the town of Turapo, who shared stories of monsters in the nearby seas that could possess the Cloudsliver Augur. Together, the Menagerie and Wehilani would hunt down the kraken known as Ilerimek, Forsworn of the Deep, gaining the party their artifact and the tribe some respite from an age-old monster. Plunging into the murky depths around an underwater tower the kraken laired in, they triumphed over Ilerimek and his cult followers. Hauling the monster's body back to Turapo to feast on together, Johanna got drunk for the first time before passing out on the sandy beach in a pile of loved ones. Now setting sail for the mainland once more, Johanna looks forward to finishing what she started with the Archbishop of Torredo, and eventually the reckoning with Silixis.

Johanna is still processing how to bear the weight of expectations that she's had since childhood, causing her to tend towards perfectionism even if it's not what she truly wants. An increasing fear and paranoia of things that lurk in the depths of the ocean.

Intellectual Characteristics

Johanna considers herself a student of history and a music aficionado, but her primary talent is her ability to navigate social situations to the benefit of herself, her allies, and preferably the common people. She started out holding true to her loftiest ideals of honesty but has learned through her travels that sometimes a more nuanced approach can be useful.

Morality & Philosophy

From a young age, Johanna has held the ideal that nobles should be pillars of society, an example of goodness that all people can look up to just as she looked up to her older brother Johan. She dislikes those who bastardize their own principles for self-aggrandizement. These beliefs led her to find common ground with the faith of Threspa, the Rilumic god of obligations.

Taboos

Johanna detests those who exploit others, particularly those who manipulate their faith. When it comes to violent conflict, she also prefers to avoid death where possible.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Johanna's driving motivation is to find her older brother Johan, but in the course of her travels she has learned of perils that face Rilumir at large. Her biggest concerns are the primordial crystal dragon Silixis, the systemic oppression of the Esgili people and their religion by the Khazmag Khaganate, and the Archbishop of Torredo's machinations and ongoing crusade against the Varlings.

She has received numerous blessings from the god, and has spent time working alongside the temple of Threspa in Maribor for the public good. Johanna considers the Archbishop of Threspa in Torredo to be anathema to the teachings of the faith she ostensibly leads.

Social Aptitude

Johanna is very well spoken and cognizant of etiquette, she sometimes thinks of herself as a walking thesaurus of flowery words to placate the people around her.

Mannerisms

Johanna tries to move and speak with fluidity and grace, allowing others to lead in conversation so she can understand their views and goals before lending her own thoughts.

Hobbies & Pets

Minka, a draconic Maine Coon-style Tressym, Johanna's familiar she acquired as a kitten before she transformed into a Tressym from draconic magic.

Speech

Wealth & Financial state

Johanna's family, the von Silbers, manage the largest silver mines in western Rilumir, and so have great personal wealth at their disposal. Though not presently tapping into that wealth in her travels, Johanna has acquired several magical items of great value including an artifact from Rilumic pre-history, the Cloudsliver Augur.
