Theban Army

The Kingdom of Thebai maintains a small standing army year-round, with its ranks swelling after spring planting and dissipating again for the harvest. Campaigns are launched in the summer. Drills and training are conducted in the winter. Patrols, culling of predators, and the quelling of insurrection are handled year-round.

Structure

The King of Thebai is the commander general of the armed forces in theory, but in practice delegates some of his authority to the Regal Therapon. A five-man counsel provides input and dissipates the command structure to ensure the therapon remains loyal to the king. This structure is replicated in army outposts across the kingdom, and within each of the two youth armies.   The youth armies recruit and train future soldiers and provide the crown princes with leadership experience. In 1121 a4, there are two: the Youth Army of Eteokles and Youth Army of Polyneikes.

History

The first army was established by Kadmos the Founder and his five Spartoi warriors. The original five-man band of Echion, Udaius, Chthonius, Hyperenor and Pelorus evolved into five discrete units.   The Tribe of Echion are warriors who fight solo with a berserker nature that emerges when they taste blood. They tend to use their teeth and fingernails as weapons, or throw stones of impressive size with inhuman strength.   The Tribe of Udaius are archers and slingers of uncanny aim.   The Tribe of Chthonius are builders and engineers, capable of erecting earthen works and stone walls in quick order. They have an intuitive sense of physical forces, including weights and balances.   The Tribe of Hyperenor are charioteers, adept and training horses and fighting from mobile platforms. They have great affinity with animals.   And the Tribe of Pelorus are spearmen who work together with an almost hive-minded sense of cooperation.   Over the generations, the Spartoi have withdrawn from active participation in the army, sending instead their vassals, slaves, and occasional surplus children. But even with non-Spartoi soldiers, the army units are still arranged by and named for the Spartoi tribes.
