Rifts

If there is one thing that causes all the problems of Mythia, it is the existence of the Rifts. The beasts they produce, their malignant influence on those who spend too much time near them, all this would seem to be the source of all evil.   Rifts are objects, or perhaps locations, that vary wildly individually. All, however, spawn Riftbeasts, typically harmful and sometimes deadly beings that can range from being extremely aggressive to almost docile.  

Creation

  Rifts are believed to be created when a malignant spellwrit is written. This spellwrit manifests into a Rift, typically consuming the author as it does so.  Rifts, being highly individual, manifest in different ways and into different things.  However, one common factor does seem to be that they consume their creators and the material used to make the spellwrit, as well as, often, the surrounding land.  

Perception

  Rifts are seen by most to be malignant objects in Mythia and avoided at all costs.  Most common folk are of the opinion that they are best left to those whose job it is to deal with them, such as Riders and Spellslinger Coteries.  Rifts have also been used as a means to effect the "disappearance" of people by criminal organisations, and a heavily mystical aura surrounds them due to the lack of knowledge about just how they are formed and work.
