The Wilds

The Wilds are a massive tropical rainforest that cover the center of Estana. It is lush and rumored to be full of gigantic monsters.

These rumors are true, as are the rumors of the people who reside alongside these monsters. The rumors that the Wilders are cannibalistic and can turn into slavering beasts on a whim is a matter of who one asks.

Mother Trees

In the Wilds, there is a type of tree that the Wilders call "Mother Trees." Mother Trees are enormous trees that can stand hundreds of stories high, their canopies large enough to shade a small city and their root systems reaching out for miles around. "Tall as a mountain, wide as a sea" is the common descriptor... albeit that is a bit exaggerated.

The most notable feature of Mother Trees? They're sentient.

In fact, Mother Trees are so named because they form empathetic connections to everything within their sphere of influence (usually the length of their root systems). This empathetic bond influences herbivores to avoid eating anything from the Mother Tree and from engaging in any violence within its vicinity. Mother Trees are also known to actively chase away carnivores, or at least influence them not to hunt nearby, as the trees find death and pain unpleasant. For this reason, the area around a Mother Tree is known to be a safe haven for most wildlife.

Certain Wilders are born with the ability to access the empathetic link of Mother Trees. These Wilders are called Treetalkers, and they act as spiritual leaders to the Wilder communities, as most Wilder communities are built within the shadow of a Mother Tree (with the stipulation, of course, that the Wilders leave the area to hunt). The trees are a huge part of Wilder religion and culture, and if you disrespect the Mother Tree... well, it will use its empathetic abilities to punish you in far worse ways than the community ever could.
