Kraom's Crossing

Kraom's Crossing is an ancient gruakhai town, built on the banks of the River Bararam. It is an important hub of trade and the last stop for travelers heading north into the Forest of the Ancients.   The settlement was built on the banks of the river's many fords, sections shallow enough to traverse by foot or wagon. It originally served as a resting place for travelers and their pack animals. traversing the west-east trade route. In recent centuries, Most of these fords have been dredged to allow easier passage for ships from the Sea of Sorrows, but also limiting the amount of viable crossings to just a few.   Since then, the settlement has gained importance on another axis of trade: The RIver Bararam itself. Goods now flow through it by river and road, and the town's opportune placement has allowed it to prosper from the increased amounts of trade. It is far from cosmopolitan, being primarily settled by gruakhai and the occasional elf or firkin, but it does see wanderers of many different sorts.   North of the settlement lies the wilderness known as the Forest of the Ancients. Though the gruakhai are at home in similar dark woods, and have traversed the hills of this wilderness for millenia, they refrain from building settlements within The Forest, out of fear and respect for the primeval woods and its denizens. For travelers and hunters heading into The Forest, Kraom's Crossing is often the last taste of civilization they will enjoy for weeks or months.
