Weaver

While nearly every Stenza of middle-childhood age or older is capable of spinning, a little bit of training is required to become a weaver. Many regions have distinctive weaves which must be learned to the point of mastery, after which point artistic innovation is considered acceptable.   Spinning and Weaving are both under the patronage of Stuz'a, who is said to be best reached by the meditative trance one enters when performing either activity for a long period of time without conversation or storytelling or other business.

Career

Qualifications

Weaving requires some specialized training that most who enter into the profession begin in adolescence, prior to the Citizenship Trial. The training typically involves the characteristic patterns of the prospective weaver's clan and region, as well as specific ancillary techniques which may be used for artistic flair (for example, the pile technique used for piled fabrics).

Career Progression

It is very common for weavers to begin their training in mid- to late adolescence under the tutelage of more experienced weavers. Once the basic patterns have been mastered (potentially with a break in study for the Citizenship Trial), and supplemental techniques studied appropriately, a weaver can be left to their own devices. This period of free rein over one's creation is sometimes seen as Stuz'a's most active time in a weaver's life specifically, when weavers produce the best art pieces of their careers, which may be passed on or placed in the clan's museum. (Following the routes individual fabrics have traveled along is almost its own historic discipline, and can tell a lot about inter-species trade.) Older weavers then take on the role of teachers to the younger crowd, passing on the traditional patterns and later the techniques they have developed.

Perception

Purpose

Weavers produce fabrics used for a host of purposes, from clothing to items like piled fabric of varying sizes to serve as supplements to furs as bedding. Before the invention of the Automated Mesh Weaving Machine, weavers produced Insulating Mesh by hand.

Social Status

While weaving maintains something of a "background" status compared to soldiering or politics, it is considered an important cultural touchstone and a distinguishing marker between clans otherwise all presenting a unified front to the rest of the universe.
