Qualifications
Anyone with the commitment and drive can build a career out of being an engine technician, and many respected forepeople are civilians. However, citizens are just as likely to be technicians as civilians, and it has sometimes been found that certain Stenza who are appropriately ambitious but do not want to join the military have funneled this energy into engine work.
Career Progression
Engine technicians are highly specialized, working exclusively on engines for the duration of their careers. Additionally it takes twice as long as many other ship's technicians, and one and a half times as long as weapons technicians, to be considered expert enough to train others. This is due to the complicated nature of engines themselves and the vast array of problems which can befall them.
