Data Chip
A data chip is an independent crystal device which exists solely to house data and display that data when connected to a holographic screen. They can store anything from tax forms and ship blueprints to complex, classified projects and research data from Crash Base. Because the storage of a single crystal device is limited, however, it is exceptionally common for many devices storing similar data to be stored together in crates.
In the case of taxes, for example, one crystal may contain the files of a single citizen, and a crate may contain all data chips associated with all citizens of a particular family, city, or other significant social grouping. Crates can then be organized by city, area of a planet, planet, and area of The Nine Systems.
Data chips which store ship blueprints are organized by ship class, type, purpose, and so on. Data chips housing classified secrets are classified primarily by date, project designation, base location, vessel designation (if on Crash Base), and so forth.

The crystal which will become a data chip can be naturally found, but a large number are lab-grown explicitly for the purpose, and many of the lab-grown works show marked increase in storage capacity and display efficiency.
