Ancient Settlement

In the Low Pass, near 'Elokh Settlement and others, are all that remains of the oldest known Stenza settlement. It was believed to be placed where it was, almost at the base of the Southern Mountains where they opened into the Pass, for at least two reasons: it was colder than surrounding areas, perhaps to allow early attempts at food preservation; and, it was nestled in at the trailheads of migration routes already ancient by that time, giving it a form of social legitimacy.   The settlement was abandoned after a short period of habitation, and evidence points to several possibilities. Not only was it inherently risky to rely on the local weather to help keep food, Pass regions are known to take the brunt of events like The Movements of the Snow Warrior, as well as garden variety snow and hail at the appropriate times of year. Additionally, the settled group of Stenza may have attracted one of the earliest instances of inter-clan warfare. In any case, many of the pups born to the settled Stenza aged into adults elsewhere.   Despite its abandonment, the settlement served as a blueprint and a list of "do's and don't's" for future settlements, built into the shelter of the mountains or close to the shore of the Ice Flats proper. Notable changes from the ancient settlement include features such as the clan residence and attached museum, as well as further developments in food preservation and storage that do more than just rely on local temperature changes.
