The Sea's Mistress

Gerald,
I'm so cross with you for telling me about these books, but I'm also steamed that you hadn't spoke of them sooner. How in the world am I meant to mend a village's worth of shoes tomorrow when I just got to the part where Jack discovers that Meri had been- well, I'd better hold my tongue in case you haven't read as far as I have. But write me as soon as you do! I need to talk about what I expect is coming in the next book before it's published, and I think you'll quite agree with my sensible theories.
Best, Alice.

Purpose

The Mistress of the Sea is a series of fantasy books written by an author known only by their pen name "D.M. Jetsa". The books are wonderfully popular with commoners throughout the north of Morova, as they are published in the very accessible Low Common tongue. They describe the adventures of Jack, a nomadic woman who is forever drawn to follow the "call of the sea". Along her journey she fights off pirates and authorities the like, often befriending unusual companions and allies along the way. One of her most steadfast friends is a woman named Meri, a curious taleweaver and the only other person who understands what Jack refers to as the "call". Several books into the series, it is shockingly revealed that Meri is the one sending the call, as she is a manifestation of the sea locked into human form as a punishment. Many readers wait on bated breath for the next installment of the series, hoping that Jack and Meri can maintain their friendship (or maybe more) in spite of new revelations and tribulations.
