United Islands of Thaeria

Geography

  Thaeria consists of 44 islands and the mainland, the majority of which has a mediterranean climate of warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Only the far north of the Salmore Heights has a cooler climate.   Many of the islands are connected through bridges, and where bridges were proving too difficult, public transportation via ferries took their place.    

Flora&Fauna

  Due to its warm and often dry climate, there is relatively little dense vegetation and instead much of the land is loosely covered in hardy shrubs and grasses. In places with a source of freshwater that lasts throughout the entire summer, like lakes or rivers, larger plants and trees can be found, such as sycamore, bay laurel, pine, eucalyptus, cypress, olive trees or grapes. The latter are especially important to the country as they have many vineyards and wine is one of their main exports.   While it is extremely rare to encounter them anywhere near settlements, sometimes Sirens can be found along the shorelines in the south, as they primarily live somewhere in the Singing Reefs. Furthermore, the mountain range south of Zykon is the home of Minotaurs and manticores, as well as some types of giants.  

Religion

  Thaeria is home to groups of almost every intelligent species, as such followers of any kind of faith can be found throughout the islands. Even the following of evil deities is not strictly forbidden, although still frowned upon, and you'll still be expected to follow the laws regardless.   The by far biggest organised religion present in Thaeria is the church of the Children of the Sun and Moon, which has many temples across the land often serving both Samrukh and Ahmestar  at the same time. The biggest temple of all is located in Orapolis and is where the the Oracle  resides. While many of the other temples have resident augurs that can be consulted if one is in need of a divination, only the Oracle can speak to the gods themselves.

Politics

  The parliament in Orapolis consists of one representative for each island (sans Ila Lupa), three representatives for the mainland regions, and one representative for the capital, resulting in a total of 47 representatives to vote on each decision to be made. Every four years a new election is held to replace the previous representatives.   Out of these representatives, one candidate is chosen to represent the entire country as a king normally would, and becomes the president for this time. Despite the fancy title however, they have little to no power on their own as it is still the parliament that decides new laws and diplomatic actions.   To become a potential candidate for a representative, one must first live on the island they would wish to represent, and be a registered citizen. After a period of five years, you become eligible for the draw. The draw is a yearly local election in which five names are drawn at random, and these five people are called to join the respective island's local council to serve for a year, until the next council is drawn. From these five people, one will be elected governor for the year after to lead the new council, and only after this second year of service do they qualify as a candidate for the position of representative of the island.   The purpose of the draw is to ensure that not only privileged individuals can become politicians, but anyone of any age (as long as they are considered adult for their race), race or social standing could theoretically become a politician. While the intentions behind this system were good, the execution is questionable at best. It is very common for candidates to mysteriously drop out, or die at the hands of the Order of the Nightrose, but it is incredibly rare for anyone to actually find the instigator. Most of the time only a single candidate remains for vote due to the death of everyone else they are automatically declared the winner and are moved to the capital, and the crimes committed remain unsolved.
