Daranor "Spider-Elves"

The Daranor or "Spider-elves", a deeply isolated and enigmatic race, live in the northern portion of Whisperwood. These beings are the product of an extraordinary and strange phenomenon that took place after the Monster Genesis Event, a cataclysmic moment in history when the world of Mordia was irrevocably altered. While much of this event brought chaos and destruction, it also had unintended consequences for some races, granting them new forms and new powers.

It all began with a massive wolf-spider, whose intelligence was awakened during the Genesis Event. This creature, unlike others of its kind, was gifted the ability to think and reason as an intelligent being. This intelligence was transferred, to varying degrees, to the hundreds of "tiny" baby spiders clinging to the mother's back(though small dog-sized to humanoids). A large city of forest-dwelling elves were transformed by their proximity to the spider colony after living peacefully for many, many years.

Some elves began to grow more arachnid features like multiple eyes and small chelicera with fangs, gaining the ability to scale walls with ease thanks to new pedipalp appendages and claws or develop heightened senses, such as enhanced vision or quicker reflexes. Their instincts shifted, growing closer to the primal nature of the spiders they had encountered, but still mostly maintaining their core elven identity and intellect. Others, the more fortunate, maintained their elven qualities, but with some subtle physical changes, such as elongated limbs or the growth of smaller, spider-like appendages, perhaps a few more eyes.

At the same time, the spiders themselves underwent a transformation. Some began to grow larger and more humanoid in form, while still retaining the predatory instincts of their original race. They became more adept at communication and formed a rudimentary society, guided by the largest spider, who became the leader of the transformed spider colony, calling themselves the Sylpharach. This spider is known as First Mother, and was a truly extraordinary creature: massive, intelligent, and nurturing of her growing children, as well as accepting of the Daranor who were confused and scared about their transformation.

The former elves, now irrevocably changed by their proximity to the spiders, formed a tight-knit community. They built their homes in the heart of the northern part of Whisperwood, a place where few outsiders dared to venture. They lived in harmony with their new spider kin, not out of fear but out of mutual respect and an understanding that they were both transformed by the same cosmic force. These Daranor and Sylpharach became a peaceful society that shunned the larger world and its chaos, seeking instead solace in the webs of their ancestors.

Civilization and Culture

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

Cultural Practices of the Daranor and Sylpharach:

  • The Passing of the Mother: Upon the death of the Mother, a period of mourning is observed by both the Daranor and the Sylpharach. During this time, the community comes together to honor the Mother and her legacy, spinning her body in their webs and pulling her into the Den of Remembrance where she will remain webbed alongside her previous Mothers.
  • Web-Shaping and Silkbinding: Silkbinders are highly respected among the Daranor and Sylpharach. They spin intricate webs of silk that are used for many purposes, from practical items like clothing and armor to ceremonial items like banners and decorations. Silk is seen as a sacred material.
  • Spider-Elders: The elders of the Daranor are seen as spiritual leaders and advisors, passing on the wisdom of the First Mother. They also act as mediators between the Daranor and Sylpharach, ensuring that both races remain in harmony and that the customs of the clan are preserved.
  • The Harvest of the Web: Every year, the clan holds a Harvest Festival, where the webs created by the Sylpharach are collected and carefully dismantled. The webs are then processed into useful materials—woven into textiles, used for crafting, or traded with other races if they happen to come across the hidden borders of Whisperwood. This festival is a time of celebration and unity, where both the Daranor and Sylpharach gather together to share their harvest and reinforce the bonds that hold their community together.

Common Myths and Legends

Among both the Daranor and the Sylpharach, the myth of the First Mother is revered as the foundational story of their race. It is said that the First Mother was not simply a spider but a demigod, imbued with the essence of the earth and life. She was the one who brought together the elves and the spiders, forging the bond that would shape the future of their people. Her wisdom was said to be so vast that the forest itself whispered her secrets, guiding the elves through their transformation and ensuring the survival of both races.

The myth goes that the First Mother lived far beyond the natural lifespan of spiders, and her connection to life allowed her to communicate with the very fabric of nature itself. After her death, the spirits of the First Mother and her wisdom were passed down through her bloodline, ensuring that each new Mother would carry a fragment of her power, as the story goes.

In the present day, the Ninth Mother is seen as a living vessel of the First Mother’s wisdom and guidance, though she herself is humble in her role, often consulting the elders and spirits of the past to ensure her leadership is in line with the will of the First Mother.
