Human

“Humans are like rocks. You’re likely to find them everywhere you go, and they always come in different shapes and sizes. They’re blunt and deftly unaware of their surroundings. And yet they’re as integral to the ground on which you walk that you can’t imagine a world without them.”
  • Feodor the Wise when discussing Humans as a race.
  • Humans are the most ubiquitous and numerous race in Verous. They inhabit every corner of society and wilderness to the point where it’s almost unheard of to find a place without them. Even before the Feroxian Liberation Conflict humans were somewhat of a common sight even in the most cloistered clan. While they aren’t always the majority, almost every city or settlement in Verous has at least a handful of them.

    Basic Information

    Anatomy

A human is a bipedal mammal, mostly hairless, and gives live birth. Their morphology is classified by having an upright spinal chord, as well as a cranium that features a brain composed of two parts.

    Genetics and Reproduction

Human beings require one with male genitalia and female genitalia counterpart to reproduce. The child is carried in the “female” for roughly 7-9 months where it is born.

    Growth Rate & Stages

    Humans gain the following developments:
    • At 1 they develop object permanence
    • At 3 they develop the ability to walk and speak simple sentences
    • At 5 most humans develop simple bonds with others, can read, write, and express more complex thoughts.
    • Between 10-15 humans undergo puberty
    • In Ferox a human is considered a full young adult at 16.
    • In Ferox a human is considered a full adult at 20.
    • Human being typically reach middle age between 40-50 years.
    • Human beings live up to 70 years old, though some rare cases live longer.
    • The oldest human who lived without the aid of magic lived to 99.

    Ecology and Habitats

Humans are capable of living in any environment so long as they can find food and water first. Afterward the use of resources go to making said environment livable.

    Additional Information

    Social Structure

Humans have built civilizations in congruence with other species. Because of this there is no universal social structure.

    Geographic Origin and Distribution

Humans can be found in significant population amounts in any section of the known world.

    Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Humans are unable to see in darkness though their eyes are able to adjust. They can hear and smell better than the average creature, and are prone to impressive feats of elongated endurance and focus.    Some humans have the power to channel the Weave of Magic, though percentage wise this is a rather small number.

    Civilization and Culture

    Major Organizations

    Notable in the known world:
    • The Feroxian Empire
    • The Holy Zygallic Church
    • Alloyus

    Major Language Groups and Dialects

Due to Humans’ tendency to blend in with others, the language of modern day Feroxi has become a mercantile language. It was this ease of use that led to it becoming the most commonly spoken language in the empire.

    History

Not much is known about humans in terms of their origins. In fact the majority of humans don’t often ponder such questions. In the Myth of the Divine Quartet humans are barely mentioned at all, save for being a species that came toward the end of Verous’ creation.    This lack of unifying cultural identity often means humans will adapt to other cultural identities, or find ways to eke out individual identities within established social norms.

    Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Humans work and trade with many other species. As such it is common for species to have general takes regarding humans:
    • Elves: Generally friendly but distant. Humans that are not raised with elvish traditions of patience, subservience, and holistic thinking often find elves to be rather difficult to spur to action. Inversely Elves consider humans to be delightful reminders to pursue goals and not simply wait around, yet can also view them as impatient, unaware, and loud.
    • Dwarves: Friendly and Cooporative. If there’s a species that is founded on mutual respect, its one between humans and dwarves. Humans tend to be in awe of dwarvish craftsmanship, design, and zeal for personal perfection. Inversely dwarves see humans as a reminder to accept life as it comes, and to let a work rest to pursue other things needing finishing. Dwarves and humans are often the most united business partners, but dwarves are often loath to keep humans as close friends.
    • Orcs: Once bitter rivals, the human and orcish relations have grown into one of great friendship. Orcish tribes, built on strength and teamwork, love to include humans in their circles and will willingly engage with them for whatever they need. Humans see orcs with mutual respect and see their proud race as a a chance to grow and learn new things. This is mostly due to the fact that Emperor Ferox I’s wife was also an orcish woman.
    • Halflings: Halflings are almost fully integrated with human settlements to the point that many other races consider them “small humans.” This is far from the truth, but halflings often don’t mind. Humans often refer to “we” in ways that casually include halflings.
    • Gnomes: Out of all the races in the world, humans and gnomes are the most separate. This is due in most part to gnomes’ general unwillingness to work with humans on a societal level as gnomes are very secular in their societies. This is not to say relations are bad, but it is uncommon to see gnomes and humans commingle in society.
    • Firbolg: ????
    • Goliath: ????
    • Lizard folk: ????
    • Kenku: ????
    • Aaracockra: ????
    • Planetouched: Out of all the races in the world, planetouched are most likely to be born from humans. In spite of this, many humans consider having planetouched children to be a curse. In the wake of numerous plagues, equinoxes, and other disasters, planetouched children are often born and often to parents who do not understand the special needs they have, or the powers they possess.
