Session 79: The Ruin of the Egg-Born Hut
General Summary
As Levi and Tertius head back to Obadiah’s cabin, they find him caring for Alda and Alda looking to take care of the cleaning of the cabin. It seems as if there is the subtext of caring for one another beneath their conversation and argument, so Tertius suggests to Levi that they spend the night outside, under the stars.
Myohn makes camp at the edge of the moors and once again, he is joined by Kåre. Once again the pair hear the song, The Longing of the Wildbound, being sung by ethereal musicians somewhere on the moors. As the pair listen to the song, Kåre asks Myohn how he can stand being here instead of in The Feywild. He understands that Myohn could go back willfully, so that must be the difference. He is not cut off.
Morning arrives and the party prepares themselves and assist with the repairs of the village. At midday, Lifstæn Anundsson, the Chieftain of Hofsa calls the town to the longhouse. The offer is made for those who would set up to join the group to fight the apex Werewolf. However, he states that those who go may not return and protectors will still be needed for Hofsa. He states that with the granary burned and some of the fields burned, even though it is still relatively early in the season, the winter will be lean. He forbids any farmers, hunters, or trappers to volunteer to fight as they will be needed to make it through the winter.
Hilda is the first to volunteer, and Alrik quickly throws his lot in after her. Svengard, with beautifully glistening skin and no touch of acne after his warpaint was removed, also offers to join. Kåre states that he is not a warrior, but asks once again if he might join the party and they agree.
Matilda gives the party 12 bundles of dried wolfsbane mixed with damp cedar and wood chips, in order to create a thick smoke when burned. She says that incense sticks would likely be too weak if lit outside.
The party stays one more night and plans to leave in the morning.
Myohn sees a white rider at the edge of the moors at dawn. She is dressed all in white and rides a white horse and she has beautiful sylvan features and long white hair. Myohn approaches her and greets her. She speaks to him with a thick accent and speaks her name in a foreign language and states that it translates to “My Bright Morning.” She says to him that she is here to herald her, but that she rides with the dawn. Myohn offers her kindness and favor and she, in return, gives him the Mark of the Bright Morning.
The party begins to travel through the moors, stopping occasionally to commune with nature to try to find the Moonwell. During a stop for lunch, the party sees a red rider outside of camp. He rides a reddish-gold roan stallion. The rider wears leather armor dyed bright red and has red hair and a thick red beard. Myohn approaches and he speaks with the same thick accent as the previous rider. He says that his name translates to “My Red Sun”. He states that he rides with the noonday sun and he is also a herald of “her”. Myohn offers him fey mushrooms and in return, he offers Myohn a well worn utility knife. Illevaere’s commune with nature determines that the red rider is a powerful being from the Feywild. He rides off and Illevaere also picks up the presence of strong fey magic on Nortle.
Inside of Nortle’s pack is an egg that she tends to avoid, almost like they are unconsciously ignoring it. However, Nortle does not recall anything about the egg, but feels compelled to protect it. Nortle also possesses a mortar and pestle and a broom that are magical. Illevaere then uses detect magic and sees enchantments on Nortle.
Illevaere dispels magic and dispels the modify memory spell that was cast on Nortle, thus restoring Nortle’s memory. Nortle recalls Mother Mayeye giving her the egg and casting geas on her, compelling her to take the egg and to bury it in the heart of the slain werewolf. With the modify memory spell in place, Nortle’s actions through the geas were subconscious and she was not aware of them.
Illevaere dispelled the geas spell and Nortle was no longer compelled to protect the egg and Nortle gave it to Illevaere. Illevaere smashes the egg and inside the broken egg are the now crushed small, still-forming hut with chicken legs. The party immediately realizes that this was meant to be Baba Yaga’s hut. And the mortar and pestle are the ones that she flies upon and the broom is the one she uses to hide her tracks. The party also realizes the connection of the white riders as being the horsemen who serve Baba Yaga and herald her arrival.
The party continues their travel, heading to a place of potent power detected by Illeavere’s spell. They find an old hut on a bit of dry land on the moors. There is a chicken coop next to the hut, full of clucking chickens. Illevaere begins a ritual and Tertius remains back to guard them as the others approach the hut.
An old, toothless woman comes out and offers the party to cook them a meal. Levi recognizes the woman as a “nicer, less hag-like” version of Mother Mayeye. Levi immediately tries to get the party to leave. The woman states that her name is Elli, and Levi recognizes that as the Rhytham word for “Crone”. She insists on making dinner for the party, taking one of the chickens and laying it onto the stump and using her hatchet to cleave off its head. The chicken’s body runs around, leaving a blood trail of chicken footprints before the body finally collapses.
As the party moves to leave, she reaches into the coop and pulls out a chicken egg, pointedly telling Nortle to take the egg for the road, though Nortle refuses. She also attempts to offer Nortle a set of iron dentures and Nortle’s refusal seems to anger her, but she does not do anything to affect the party’s retreat.
The party continues on, and eventually make camp for the night. There, they find a black rider sitting off just outside of camp. He rides a black horse and he is an old, feeble looking man in a suit of black plate armor that seems too large for his gaunt form. Myohn approaches and the rider has the same accent and states his name is “My Dark Midnight.” He is much more curt than the others and Myohn offers him mushrooms and the black rider turns down the offer, stating that much better food is being cooked at camp, but this is all Myohn is willing to offer. Myohn states that the other food is not his to offer. The black rider eventually rides off and as Illevaere finishes their communing ritual, they discover that the moonwell is about three miles from their camp.
