Session 23: Beer and Baths
General Summary
The party returned to the Feasting Horde and woke up Illevaere who had fallen asleep in the baths. They updated them on the situation, including Levi’s being upset with Tertius. Illevaere pulled Levi aside to impart their wisdom on him about how one needs to let go of their children or wards and let them grow. Levi corrected them and said that his feelings for Tertius were not fatherly, but rather romantic. Illevaere had no advice for this situation.
Ilbryen offered to accompany Tertius so that he was not alone. Tertius offered to accompany them to the library first, as he knew Ilbryen wanted to explore it. Along the way there, Tertius talked with Ilbryen, not understanding why Levi was so upset with him. Ilbryen told him that it was because Levi had romantic feelings toward Tertius. Tertius admitted to being unaware and also unfamiliar with such things and suggested that he look for a book about it in the library. They had Jack Leveret lead them through the city to the Arcanum, a large stone building that served as both a library and a temple to Emore. Upon entering, the maze of bookshelves made immediate sense to Ilbryen who recognized them laid out in the pattern of Emore’s sigil. An older woman named LeDonna approached and welcomed their arrival. She recognized Ilbryen as a follower of Emore and told them about the library and temple. She explained that the clerics scribe books that come into the library and pass them on to other places to expand on the knowledge available. LeDonna suggested that if Ilbryen had extra time, that they partake in some of the scribework, but also suggested that Ilbryen take some of the books to spread out along their journeys, and they agreed.
Ilbryen also had to contend with Cornelius Peck in her mind. He insisted that he was patient and waited until they were in a city and now it was her responsibility to resurrect him. He says that any temple of The Allfather should be able to do it free of charge and that they will be rewarded handsomely for it. However, Ilbryen once again told Cornealus that he would have to wait longer.
Tertius went to look for books pertaining to romance, specifically same sex romance while Ilbryen looked up some of the local histories to find more about Queen Alestair. Given that the books in the library are admittedly likely to be favorable to the Queen that rules from this city, Ilbryen was able to read that she seems to be popular and considered by most in her kingdom to be just. Being close to Myrloch Vale and the druids and Fey that venerate the place, she has done much to appease them, creating and forging bonds with the groups within. Tertius returned with his books, a book of anatomy and a romance book entitled “The Squire and His Knight”. He also had an illustration of an owlbear to bring back to Reginald. The pair remained in the library until it was close to time to go to the bathhouse to meet the Princess.
The others, meanwhile, collected Levi’s fish left at the Feasting Horde and traveled outside of the city proper to make a fire and for Levi to cook up food for the group. After their dinner, they went to the Steel Hook, to meet up with the Northlander that invited Levi there.
Roald, the Northlander who invited Levi, saw him and recognized him, immediately heading over to greet him and the others. After introductions were made, Roald bought a round of drinks for everyone and began to talk about the Harbingers. The Harbingers, he says, oppose the rule of a High Monarch. He believes that the Northlanders have suffered the most from the High Queen’s rule. They give soldiers and ships, crops and gold to the Queen with a promise of protection that does not come. The Formorians have plagued the isles to the North and the High Queen is too busy to help the Jarls. He says that sending people and supplies to the High Queen weakens the Northlanders. The Ice Maiden, a Northlander warrior, stands against the rule of a High Monarch and has shown others the same way.
They do not battle the High Queen’s forces. Instead, their rebellion consists of teaching locals to do things for themselves, so that they do not require the High Queen to aid them. He has members in the city who are teaching the locals to make their own fishing nets and ships so that they do not have to rely on the workers loyal to the Queen. His hope is that the people will turn their back on the High Queen and instead people should be self-reliant. Each of the Isles should be independent.
He found an unexpected supporter in Illevaere who discussed politics with him as Levi and Bolvaic drank. Eventually, Roald asked if the group could help him out. He pointed out two “plain clothes” watch members at one of the tables. Roald says that they are here to spy on their meeting, but there is a member of their organization that he needs to sneak out of the tavern since it is being watched. He asks the group if they could distract the pair while he leads the other out of the tavern.
Bolvaic hopped up onto a table and began to sing a Dwarven drinking song and the bard joined in. Levi went over and asked one of the guards to dance with him. The two successfully occupied the watch members long enough for Roald to sneak his compatriot out unnoticed.
As the night wore on and drinks continued, the group was able to, rather unintentionally, convince Roald that the watch tends to be intimidated by nakedness and he taunted the watch members naked, forcing them to slip out and leave the tavern. As Levi got sick, the group decided to bunk with Roald in his room upstairs at the tavern for the night.
Meanwhile, Ilbryen took Tertius to the Sly Siren Baths for his rendezvous. There he was told that someone had left a room key for him and Tertius and Ilbryen went to one of the rooms. After knocking, Tertius used the key he was given and the pair entered. It was a plush room with its own hearth and private bath. Princess Ireltharis was there along with a female personal guard. She thanked Tertius for coming and greeted Ilbryen happily. She explained the reason for the summons: she has a “very close friend” who is a member of the watch. He is currently investigating the disappearance of a number of people but with little progress. She says that since Tertius is here with a group of adventurers, she thought that he could help him. She tells him that he is Inspector Baremin Barleyhare and he is stationed at the Watchhouse in Lower Craftenor. She says that with the group’s discrete help, he might get promoted and once he is a high enough rank, she can be seen publicly with him.
Tertius tells her that they will do what they can and he and Ilbryen head back to the Feasting Horde for the night.
