The Twilae

The Twilae and the Twila are the ice caps at the polar north and south respectively. About a thousand years ago, the climate took a sharp downturn, and the world has cooled by a full degree. The select governments of the world united to say enough damage had been done in the past to alter the climate in erratic and sometimes dangerous ways. This time nature will take its own course and we will adapt.  The Twilae ice sheet's been steadily growing since then while the Twila has been much slower because of more ocean to freeze and not much land. The Twilae ice sheet sits at the 53 Degree line (approximately), half a kilometer thick and picking up speed from year to year. Scientists' thing the ice sheet could reach its zenith in a few more thousand years, but nobody really knows how far south it will roll or how long it will last. The seven republics that make up the One World Government do what they can to ferry people away from the frozen zones into warmer territory. These same governments have looked off world in great colonies on terraformed worlds and moons. The cost has been great and energy in short supply, until now. The frozen zones are the spot where life meets death. Many species have adapted through the leadership of the Twilae Bear and Reindeer coalition. These creatures refused to move south and instead rebuilt their cities in the granite hard glacial ice. In some places tunnelling some thousand meters below ground in some of the more northern sites. Through them, many innovative technologies to beat the cold and freezing temperatures have been developed that have helped tremendously on off world colonies far from any sunlight. Life never gives up, it wants to live.
