Adulthood pilgrimage Tradition / Ritual in Ménicéa | World Anvil

Adulthood pilgrimage

The Adulthood pilgrimage is a happy event awaiting every young géroun as they approach 14 years old. It is a year-long journey on Menicea where they get to meet people and get to know the rest of the continent.

Discovering Menicea

The Pilgrimage is about culture and encounters. Young people meet in groups of ten to twenty people, supervised by a few doves and travel by wagon from village to village, region to region.   They venture into mountains, forests, and plains during the day, sometimes alongside a patrol to keep everyone safe. At dusk, they get to know the locals and share a meal with them, never without a game or two of dominoes once everyone has eaten.

Accessibility

Taking part in the Pilgrimage is a menicean right for every young Géroun and comes free of charge. No matter where they come from, all children should be able to join.   Transports are funded by the Clergy, and food is either hunted by the groups themselves or provided by large cities. Smaller villages may also offer meals against help for a day. This way, pilgrims get to eat while also experiencing what it is like to live there.

I met him during my pilgrimage, yes! He was from the other side of the valley, and we were in the same group. We became good friends and eventually got closer; On our way back, I decided to move to Sylvan-Haven with him!

Impact

The Pilgrimage is a tradition born over a century ago. King Theoris created it as a way to stop the different regions of Menicea to grow apart from each other.   The idea was to raise Menicean's cultural level by introducing them to the other parts of their homeland. The crown started by experimenting with a few groups whose results were more than promising. A few years later, pilgrimages were officialized by the Clergy.   As a result, national stability and unity drastically rose in the following decades.
